Star Wars: Trials of the Jedi - The Galaxy of 2245BBY

Two Thousands before the Battle of Yavin, the Galaxy was quite a different place. While a Galactic Republic exists, it is not the expansive organization that is eventually replaced by the Empire.
The Republic comprises the bulk of civilized systems in the Core and Colonies Regions, as well as numerous systems in the Inner Rim. Beyond that however, the Republic's reach is restricted to pockets of influence along the Perlemian and Corellian Trade lanes. This influence however, does not extend beyond the Mid Rim - nor does it extend much into the mysterious Deep Core.

Representation within the Senate is fluid, sometimes with as few as a hundred Senators - or swelling to several thousand. At its head are the three Republic Consuls, one voted in by the Senate - one appointed by the Judiciary Courts, and one by the recommendation of the Jedi High Council - who maintain strong ties with the Republic but function largely as an independent state. By tradition, however, the Jedi are prohibited from holding public office.

Moving outward from the Galactic Core, beyond the Republic is the Expansion and Mid Rim. Here the heart of the galaxy's industry rests. Most systems remain soverign, independent governments - localized within either their home system and associated colonies - or at most, within their home sector. The true powers, however, are the vast corporations - which maintain control over the resource rich worlds within the Regions known space. Much of these Regions remain unexplored Wild Space.

In the vast Outer Rim lay the remaining 'super powers' of the Galaxy --- specifically the Zygerrian Slaver Empire (which dominates the Galactic North) and the Hutt Clan cartels (which control nearly the entirety of the Galactic East). Both are as large, if not larger, than the Republic itself. The Zygerrians in particular occupy a place of importance and influence, as they control a bulk of the slave trade within the Republic, as well as the Inner and Mid Rim.

The ancient enemies of the Jedi, the Sith, also control a sizable empire, largely situated between the Perlemian and Hydian Way. After millennia of war with the Jedi, however, the Sith Empire has largely collapsed in on itself - with civil wars and coups common place. It has been nearly two centuries since the Sith have been united under strong leadership - and have largely faded into obscurity.

Finally, there are the Jedi. While the Holy Order maintains strong ties with the Republic, it functions independently of the Senate and retains control of a sizable number of sanctuary worlds. Their influence, however, is not limited to these worlds - and Jedi Temples, Praxeums and Monasteries can be found throughout the Galaxy - even within Zygerrian and Hutt Space (though there are much fewer here) The High Council is the de-facto leadership of the Order, based on the Republic Capital World of Coruscant. In reality, their true control over the Order is somewhat limited. Given the vastness of Known Space, and the Jedi's history as explorers, the Jedi Order is spread far beyond the network of Hyperspace Relay Beacons that allow of effective communications and many Jedi Sanctuary Worlds can only be reached through the use of a Hyperspace Sextant and manually calculated Hyperspace jumps. This has made the Jedi Order somewhat segmented - with the local Master Councils having much more control and influence of the day-to-day function of the Jedi within their area.
