"Fortune and glory, kid. Fortune and glory." - Indiana Jones

Origin

My name is Evemwyr Afgncaap Jr.
Adjunct Professor of Archaeology of the Conclave of Silverymoon
Junior Apprentice Scrivener of the Vault of Sages
Journeyman Cartographer of the Map House

I'd intended on adding "Explorer Extraordinaire" to my list - because it sounds impressive - but my first official expedition did not go so well. Actually it went quite poorly. I've manged to lose my way, the rest of my expedition, I'm pretty sure they all died in that cave-in yesterday and my canary, Philip. Oh - and I've been stripped of all my belongings by the dark elf slavers who currently have me locked inside a cage with some other unsavory and odorous individuals.
But lets put all that unjollyness aside and talk about me. I am the...36th.. No. 37th hatching to the seventh Queen of the Afgncaap tribe, a small kobold tribe off the northern coast of Chult. So I'm a Prince really. Prince Evemwyr. I don't really have a clue who my father was. The males of the tribe are my father, though paternal possession was never a thing among my kin. They don't exactly keep concise records of which males fertilized which eggs, and all the males of the Afgncaap tribe are called Evemwyr anyway. So I, Evemwyr, son of Evemwyr and the Seventh Afgncaap Queen was born in the summer. I'm not sure when precisely, again - lack of records. I choose to believe I was born on the first day of Summertide. That's what I listed on my Covenant of Silvermoon application. And my application to join the monks of Candlekeep, which they so rudely declined.
But how did you wind up in the Sword Coast Evemwyr?, I'm sure you must be asking yourself. Well, fortune sought me out and opened the way. There was a shipwreck on the coast near our village and my clan captured the survivors. The tribe believed they were gifts from the sea god, a giant, empty crab carapace that my grandmother would hide inside and speak loudly through a conch shell to keep the tribe in line - well, the tribe intended to feast upon the captives, dreadful tradition, human doesn't even taste very good. Although one of these was an elf, which are nasty - we threw that one back into the sea.
After the feast, I got to poking around at the wrecked ship. We'd already stripped it of everything of interest, but the tribe had overlooked a conch with a strange symbol traced upon it, having assumed it to be a common seashell. We did live just off the beach after all. Curiosity drew me to it and when I blew upon it, the rune lit up and the world shifted beneath my feet and the sky warped in upon itself and I was pitched through space across the lands of Faerun, landing me squarely in an suite of rooms at the Safehaven Inn in Waterdeep.
I will simply summarize my first few years in Waterdeep; awful. Waterdeep is an awful, horrible place filled with the most loathsome, terrible people. City of Splendors indeed. I learned to survive. I fell in with a cheery group of youngsters, called the <PINKIES> and we helped each other. And I discovered art. Nobles own and neglect some of the most delightful things - objects so beautiful with stories and histories you would never imagine. So I rescued them and we found them new homes where they would be better appreciated. That wasn't enough for me, though. I wanted to know their stories. I wanted to know where they came from, who had made them and what were they feeling when they did.
Black Staff Tower. I sat outside that tower for three days and no one every came in or out to see me.
Candlekeep. Too poor, they said. Too scaly, they said. Unsuitable donation. They demanded a priceless tome and turned their nose up at the magic conch I presented as if it had been filled with offal.
Silverymoon. Ah, there is no place more majestic or beautiful in all the world that I've seen or read about than the fair city of Silverymoon. I had heard of the Map House. I love maps! And I was already very good with maps, having been in charge of scoping and drawing up heist maps for the <PINKIES>. I was not aware that the Map House, along with several other educational institutions in Silverymoon had all been united under the banner of the Covenant of Silverymoon.
They were polite and listened to my stories. I presented the coin I had saved, a rare horticultural book I had procured and the magical conch that had begun my journey some years ago.
Well. As I said. They were polite, which is more than I can say for my prior petitions. I was sent on my way with kind words of encouragement. But before I'd even left the grounds, one of the women who had been in attendance, but not involved, in my petition, approached me. She asked to see my book, so I handed it to her. She smiled as she paged through it and proposed a trade, that she'd been looking for this exact book, and she thought that that the Conclave might reconsider my petition with the tome she was offering. I had nothing to lose. Although I did hesitate, I hadn't read the last chapter on the synthesis of horticultural vinegar yet. I nodded and she handed me a tome wrapped in cloth. I unwrapped it to find the Treatise on the Mythallar of Netherese. I had no idea what a Mythallar or a Netherese was (yet). I looked up to ask if she might be willing to swap my book back, but she was gone.
I once again presented my coin, magic conch and the mystery woman's book and was enrolled and given a bed in a tiny cell to call my own before I really knew what was happening.
Oh. And the mystery woman remained a mystery. When I'd asked who she had been, my interviewers said that no one else had been present save for myself and themselves.
