Operations

The Imperial Army exists to ensure the supremacy of the Empire's military on the surface of planets. Typical objectives include:

  • Engagement with enemy infantry and armored vehicles.
  • Destruction of an enemy holding of some kind.
  • Creating opportunities for the deployment of more specialized units, including IA Special Missions or stormtrooper units.
  • Establishing and maintaining control of specific resources
  • Defense of supply line integrity
  • Defend emplacement or other site

Leadership

The first and final master of the Imperial Army is of course the Emperor himself.

  • Joint Chiefs: Beyond this, though, are the Joint Chiefs, made up of Naval admirals and those generals of the Army who have been appointed as Chiefs of the Imperial Army. At current, this is solely Cassio Tagge, who is the only Army office to sit on the Joint Chiefs council.
  • Army Command: The Joint Chiefs communicate their wishes down to Army Command, senior generals who oversee all practical and operational aspects of the Imperial Army.

Corps Headquarters

Imperial-garrison.jpg

The basic base configuration for Imperial Army deployment, a Corps HQ is generally allocated as the Imperial garrison of a single planet. These were generally pre-fabbed Rothana Heavy Engineering IM-455 Modular Garrisons. They are dropped in pre-fab packages from Star Destoyers via Y-85 Titan dropships to be constructed by Imperial engineers and construction droids; Imperial-class SDs can and often do carry one such installation, while Executor-class SDs can carry up to three of them.

Imperial Army

Though a garrison, or corps headquarters, acts as the base for a corps, it is rare if ever that the entire corps is located in that base. Indeed, the garrison buildings themselves do not have room for all the personnel of an entire corps. Instead, they are usually deployed to other sites around the planet to act to secure that world for Imperial interests.

  • Major General: An army Major General oversees a garrison. The major general has five staff officers, each of whom also has two staff officers of their own.
  • 280 command personnel, commanding various departments and divisions
  • 10 AT-ATs and 10 AT-STs, with 50 walker crewers and 80 walker technicians
  • 50-100 speeder bikes and/or landspeeders, with 10 speeder technicians
  • 200 perimeter support troops
  • 150 base security/detention troops
  • 100 miscellaneous vehicles (construction, cargo, maintenance, etc.)

Imperial Stormtroopers

  • Stormtrooper Major: A stormtrooper Major oversees the Stormtrooper corpsmen of the garrison.
  • 800 stormtroopers
  • 40 scout troopers

Imperial Navy

  • TIE fighters, usually in one of the following:
    • 30 TIE/LN starfighters and 5 TIE bombers
    • 36-40 TIE fighters (three squadrons)
  • 40 TIE fighter pilots

Intelligence Staff

  • ISB Commander: An ISB Commander oversees the ISB agents assigned to the garrison.
  • 50 ISB Agents
  • Imperial Intelligence Agent: A single agent from Imperial Intelligence oversees local intelligence assets.

Base Personnel

  • 500 support/services personnel
  • 200 technical personnel
  • 200 science personnel
  • 100 medical personnel
  • 100 gunners/weapons technicians
  • 70 trade mission/diplomatic personnel
  • 60 ground crew technicians
  • 25 controllers
  • 25 sensor technicians

Defenses

Garrison bases were equipped with three heavy twin turbolaser turrets and six heavy laser turrets, as well as tractor beam projectors. Though shielded, garrisons also possessed extensive ground defenses such as anti-infantry and anti-vehicle minefields and a ten-meter high electrified death fence. This had variable power settings, so it could either severely shock an individual or fry them outright in an instant, depending on the base commander's choice.

To get through the fence and into the base, units had to pass through force field gates. These were flanked by two guard towers with stormtroopers on constant duty and positioned evenly around the fence's perimeter. Running behind the fence and parallel to it was an elevated catwalk patrolled by stormtroopers with guard towers (each equipped with electrobinoculars, floodlights, and alarm systems) spaced every 100 meters.

Some garrison bases were positioned to use the terrain to their advantage, such as setting them into mountainsides or on outcroppings. These tailored their ground defenses accordingly. Garrison bases also possessed air recyclers and advanced environment and filter systems allowing them to be deployed almost anywhere, from hostile worlds to asteroids.

Formations

The strategic organization of Imperial Army units are as follows:

Army

Commander: General • Composition: 4 Major Generals, 16 Colonels, 64 Lieutenant Colonels, 256 Majors, 1024 Captains, 4096 Lieutenants, 16,384 Sergeants, 131,072 IA Troopers
An army is composed of four corps and capable of capturing and holding key planetary systems. Though most individual armies' generals answer directly to Imperial Army Command, multiple armies in a given sector are frequently put under the command of a sector's Moff.

Corps

Commander: Major General • Composition: 4 Colonels, 16 Lieutenant Colonels, 64 Majors, 256 Captains, 1024 Lieutenants, 4096 Sergeants, 32,768 IA Troopers
A corps is designed to capture entire planets. As such, their command structures inevitably see oversight from Imperial Intelligence and other advisors. A corps HQ is always constructed, and consists of at least one fully automated manufacturing facility.

  • Line Corps: Three line battlegroups and one assault battlegroup.
  • Atrisian Corps: Named for an ancient order of warriors, this configuration includes two assault battlegroups, one line battlegroup, and one armor battlegroup.
  • Armor Corps: Intended for heavy offense, an armor corps is three armor battlegroups and one mobile battlegroup.

Company

Commander: Captain • Composition: 4 Lieutenants, 16 Sergeants, 128 IA Troopers
Composed of four platoons, a company is capable of taking a city. They are large enough to include the services of support personnel (including logistics, medical, and technical support troops). A company also includes a large number of military-issue droids to resupply troops in the field and perform administrative functions at command posts.

  • Line Company: Generally composed of three line platoons and one heavy weapons repulsorlift platoon.
  • Assault Company: Also called heavy weapons companies, these are typically composed of two line platoons and two assault platoons, generally acting as the multipurpose surface unit.
  • Scout Company: A single operating company consisting of four scout platoons and their vehicles.
  • Repulsorlift Company: Two repulsorlift platoons are used to transport and then provide covering fire for two line platoons.
  • Drop Company: Skilled survivalists usually made up of two scout platoons and two assault platoons, these companies are frequently dropped behind enemy lines, scouting out landing zones and resupply points used later during full-scale invasions.
  • Artillery Company; or Battery: A battery consists of four artillery platoons.
  • Armor Company (Attack Armor): Made up of three armor platoons and a heavy weapons platoon, deployed for their battlefield versatility.
  • Armor Company (Breakthrough Armor): Breakthrough armor companies always consist of four armor platoons, acting as devastating sources of destruction.
  • Special Missions Company: Operating as expeditionary forces, combining three special missions platoons and one scout platoon, allowing them to quickly identify and accomplish mission objectives.

Platoon

Commander: Lieutenant • Composition: 4 Sergeants, 32 IA Troopers
Composed of four squads, the platoon is considered capable of capturing and pacifying a small settlement, or a notable district in an urban area.

  • Line Platoon: A basic infantry platoon, composed of four line squads.
  • Assault Platoon: A blended configuration of two line squads and two heavy weapons squads. It may be augmented with armored vehicles.
  • Artillery Platoon: A collection of four artillery pieces or eight artillery-equipped light vehicles, and their crews, all intended to assault distant targets.
  • Repulsorlift Platoon: Made up of four repulsorlift squads, used for harassment skirmishes to disrupt enemy lines.
  • Heavy Weapons Repulsorlift Platoon: Four heavy repulsorlift squads combined to create a signficiant infantry-breaking force.
  • Armor Platoon: Consisting of either four heavy walkers or eight repulsorlift tanks, accompanied by two heavy transport vehicles for repair and resupply.
  • Special Missions Platoon: These platoons are often built on an ad hoc basis, constructed around the specific needs of a given mission or deployment. A typical such complement might include two sharpshooter squads, an engineering squad, and a heavy weapons squad, for example.
  • Scout Platoon: Made up of two scout squads and two line squads, intended for reconnaissance missions or for the delivery of messages in the case of comms malfunction or jamming.

Squad

Commander: Sergeant • Composition: 8 IA Troopers
The smallest unit of Imperial Army forces, composed of nine troopers: eight IA troopers, and a sergeant as the acting commander, largely considered capable of taking and securing a building. They are frequently divided into two four-man "fire teams". Each squad frequently has a specific specialty, with equipment and training that reflects that. The typical formations are:

  • Line Squad: The basic Imperial infantry unit, intended for deployment in a wide variety of situations, often as support or defense for other resources.
  • Heavy Weapons Squad: As the Line Squad, but equipped with light repeating blasters to provide front-line firepower.
  • Sharpshooter Squad: Often made up of Special Missions troopers, and armed with sniper rifles and deployed in overlapping fields of fire in the terrain.
  • Engineering Squad: Also frequently made up of Special Missions troopers, and composed of demolitions and repair experts with extensive tech training.
  • Repulsorlift Squad: A unit made up of drivers, gunners and mechanics, usually divided between two light repulsorlift transports.
  • Heavy Weapons Repulsorlift Squad: Also assigned to the operation of two repulsorlift transports, these vehicles are packed with repeating blaster cannons or grenade launchers.
  • Scout Squad: The basic recon squad consists of two "lances" - each a group of four troopers equipped with speeder bikes or AT-RTs.

Armored Vehicles

The Imperial Army is perhaps best known for its armored vehicles, engines of war whose design is recognizable almost immediately as signaling an Imperial presence.

Airspeeders

LAATLE-patrolgunship.jpg LAAT/le Patrol Gunship
Santhe/Rothana Heavy Engineering
The law enforcement model of the powerful LAAT series of military gunships, the /le is a slimmed down demilitarized model used in dense urban areas. Capable of quickly deploying up to twelve officers in full riot gear and then pulling back to serve as air support, the /le is agile for a speeder of its size. Imperial forces often make use of the LAAT/le for urban pacification efforts.
Weapons: Ball turret-mounted light laser cannons, forward-mounted missile launchers
Complement: One pilot, one gunner; 12 passengers
LAATC-carrier.jpg LAAT/c Assault Carrier
Rothana Heavy Engineering
Originally developed and deployed during the Clone Wars by the Grand Army of the Republic, the LAAT/c carried heavy walkers and other armor meant to be deployed directly onto the battlefield. Today, they are largely a thing of the past, but in some areas, the Empire may still used them to deploy vehicles or walkers occasionally.
Weapons: Two turret-mounted light laser cannons
Complement: One pilot, one co-pilot, one loadmaster/engineer; 2 passengers; one AT-TE walker, four AT-RT walkers, or comparable vehicle load

Landspeeders

614AVA-speederbike.jpg 614-AVA Speeder Bike
Aratech Repulsor Company
A lightweight speeder commissioned by Imperial forces for reconnaissance and military police units, and for urban activities. Little more than a repulosor drive-thruster pack, a control pod, and control surfaces mounted to a pair of stout telescoping frame rails, the 614-AVA is collapsable down to a package of about a cubic meter or so.
Weapons: Forward-mounted blasters
Complement: One pilot, one passenger
74Z-speederbike.jpg 74-Z Military Speeder Bike
Aratech Repulsor Company
Frequently used by Imperial military forces as scout, courier, and fast combat transport vehicle. Those in Imperial service are equipped with comlinks, rudimentary optical sensors, and a close-range comlink jammer, as well as a light repeating blaster.
Weapons: Forward mounted light repeating blaster
Complement: One pilot, one passenger
K79S80-transport.jpg K79-S80 Imperial Troop Transport
Ubrikkian Industries
A large, heavy-duty transport landspeeder used to move stormtroopers, prisoners, and supplies between planetside locations, the transport is blocky and unassuming, with six racks on the sides that allows stormtroopers to disembark from quickly...or even fire weapons from directly without dismounting. The same slots can be locked down for transporting prisoners. Forward of the racks are the doors into the cab, which seats a pilot, co-pilot, and a commanding officer, with a pass into the cargo area. The rear of the vehicle has a cargo door for easy access of large goods. The roof of the ITT is also capable of storing goods as well.
Weapons: Two front-mounted light blaster cannons, turret-mounted twin light blaster cannon
Complement: One pilot, one co-pilot, one commander; 10 passengers + 6 on side racks
LAVRQH7-airspeeder.jpg LAVr QH-7 Chariot Command Speeder
Uulshos Manufacturing
A combination staff car, VIP transport, and command/comms/control speeder, the Chario is used by Imperial armed forces. Fast and agile, with a low-angled silhouette making it fairly difficult to hit, the Chariot boasts a powerful sensor and comms array, continuous orbital data uplink, and numerous electronic counter-measure and counter-countermeasure systems. It is heavily shielded against electronic attack and ion weapons, as well
Weapons: Ventral-mounted light laser cannon
Complement: One vehicle commander, one driver, one guard gunner, four comms/electronic warfare droids
SC2M-repulsortank.jpg SC2-M Repulsor Tank
Rothana Heavy Engineering
An innovative addition to the Imperial military, the SC2-M is a light tank built for hit-and-run tactics. It is resistant to the weapons most troops carry, and highly maneuverable enough to avoid being pinned down by heavier craft. The Empire typically uses them as pickets, patrol vehicles, and raiders.
Weapons: Forward-mounted twin light blaster cannon
Complement: One pilot, one gunner; 1 passenger

Imperial Walkers

ATAA-walker.jpg AT-AA All Terrain Anti Aircraft
Rothana Heavy Engineering
Fielded by the Imperial Army for anti-aircraft situations, the AT-AA is a slow, plodding vehicle used for rear echelon, over-the-horizon artillery support and air defense, rather than front-line combat. Though they are well-equipped to deal with enemy aircraft, they are rather vulnerable to ground vehicle and infantry assaults; as a result, they are almost always fielded with infantry and AT-ST support.
Weapons: Turret-mounted twin light flak cannon or turret-mounted concussion missile tube
Complement: One pilot, one gunner, one vehicle commander; 2 passengers
ATACT-walker.jpg AT-ACT All Terrain Armored Cargo Transport
Rothana Heavy Engineering
Similar to the AT-AT, the AT-ACT is deployed at shipyards and military construction sites by Imperial forces. Instead of the AT-AT's troop carrier compartment, the ACT features a two-decked cargo hold equipped with sophisticated cargo-handling and inventory systems which can load or unload immense amounts of materiel in minutes. AT-ACTs are never deployed alone, but are protected by AT-ATs, At-STs, and similar armor.
Weapons: Forward-mounted twin heavy laser cannon
Complement: One pilot, one vehicle commander/gunner/loadmaster; 10 passengers
ATAT-walker.jpg AT-AT All Terrain Armored Transport
Rothana Heavy Engineering
Part troop carrier, part heavy assault vehicle, and part terror weapon, the AT-AT is as much a sign of Imperial dominance as the sight of a Star Destroyer. Often doubling as mobile command centers that allow high-ranking officers to direct a battle from relative safety, AT-ATs possess strong sensor arrays and communications hubs. Their troop carrier compartments can carry full platoons of Imperial soldiers and their combat gear to quickly deploy them onto the battlefield.
Weapons: Forward-mounted twin heavy laser cannons, forward-mounted twin heavy blaster cannon
Complement: One pilot, one co-pilot/gunner, one vehicle commander, one engineer, one loadmaster; 40 troops in full combat gear
ATDP-walker.jpg AT-DP All Terrain Defense Pod
Rothana Heavy Engineering
An iteration of the AT-ST, the Defense Pod is a lighter armament intended for policing rather than frontline combat. Deployed on occupied worlds throughout the Empire, this walker is used to defend important Imperial assets such as military facilities, shipyards, distribution centers, and vital infrastructure.
Weapons: Forward-mounted heavy laser cannon
Complement: One pilot, one gunner
ATDT-walker.jpg AT-DT All Terrain Defense Turret
Rothana Heavy Engineering
Exceptional support units that should never see front-line combat, the Defense Turret unleashes powerful artillery at a distance, often used for defending installations and providing surprise artillery barrages. Though it is piloted by a single operator, their main job is to move the vehicle into place and open fire, letting the cannon's fire-control systems handle everything from loading to calculating windage to firing.
Weapons: Forward-mounted self-loading artillery cannon, forward-mounted twin light blaster cannon
Complement: One pilot/gunner
ATRT-walker.jpg AT-RT All Terrain Reconnaissance Transport
Rothana Heavy Engineering
First fielded by the Grand Army of the Republic, these personal walkers provide a single trooper with high mobility and tactical flexibility. It features a small but sophisticated sensor package, a powerful encrypted comm system, and a sound-baffling system to aid in stealthy operations.
Weapons: Forward-mounted heavy repeating blaster
Complement: One pilot
ATST-walker.jpg AT-ST All Terrain Scout Transport
Rothana Heavy Engineering
A medium-sized bipedal walker designed as a fast force reconnaissance vehicle. Either deployed in tandem for long-range recon or in a squadron when supporting troops and armor. The armed command pod can rotate 180 degrees, allowing it to quickly bring its weapons to bear without having to shift its stance.
Weapons: Port-mounted light blaster cannon, starboard-mounted concussion grenade launcher, chin-mounted twin heavy blaster cannon
Complement: One pilot, one gunner

Wheeled & Treaded Vehicles

TX225Occupier-tank.jpg TX-225 GAVW "Occupier" Combat Assault Tank
Rothana Heavy Engineering
The premier Imperial light urban combat vehicle, the Occupier is deployed in occupied cities and in Imperial military facilities rather than on the front lines. Roughly the size of a heavy speeder truck, they have a crew compartment in which three troopers can be (uncomfortably) placed, plus a long, flat truck bed that can hold cargo or a squad of troopers. Thanks to their tread and drivetrain, they are capable of stopping, turning, and maneuvering in incredibly tight quarters.
Weapons: Two sponson-mounted elevating twin medium laser cannons, forward-mounted twin light blaster cannon, dorsal pintle-mounted light repeating blaster
Complement: Three crew, plus up to a squad of other troopers
