Origin

Everyone in Waterdeep knows Helidar Eltorchul and his concort, Tyanda. What very few are aware of is that around the Eltorchul villa and during the Divine Pageantry Tyanda answers to the name Modis former scion of House Ilzimmer before his marriage to Helidar. While saececraft alone lets Modis move from his magical classroom to the glittering parties of the nobility of Waterdeep with none the wiser, it was only magic that could provide Helidar what both of them wanted most: heirs.

Five Magical Babes

To accomplish this unfathomable feat of magic, Helidar and Tyanda scoured Waterdeep for years, seeking someone willing to sell - for a very precious cost, no doubt - a means of casting the wish spell, that most potent of sorceries beyond the grasp of all but archmages. Eventually, though, they secured one. Waterdhavians still whisper about what the price must have been, and whom exactly they might still owe for it! Once secured, though, Modis and Helidar secluded themselves for six months in purification and arcane preparation, and on the Divine Pageantry of 1350 DR, they performed a miraculous act: bringing five new nobles, children commingled of both their essences, into the world.

While Tyanda Eltorchul might be from Vaeteru, Modis Ilzimmer was not, and the Consort of House Izimmer, Xantha Ilzimmer, was not about to let a connection with one of the magical Waterdhavian noble families go to waste. Xantha began hosting a ball after the Temple of Beauty’s Grand Court, ostensibly in honor of Sune, marking the only time on the social calendar where the nobility, the priesthood of Sune, and the saece mingled openly. More directly she has made sure that she (and her gifts) were represented at every major milestone in the children’s lives and has encouraged her children to look on the Eltorchul magical quintuplets as favourite cousins. Even Shirrye is said to have more time for the quintuplets then most.

Childhood & Presentation

Ran Eltorchul was acknowledged as the fifth child and youngest son of the group. A rambunctious but sensitive child, Ran had Modis’s favourite (though he would never admit it) combination of Ildigan’s eyes and his smile. Ran was always close to his Da (though always Mother in public), and wanted to grow up to be just like him. While he could not attend any noble events in his early teens, he would often go to Vaeteru with his mother and grew familiar with the grand dames of Vaeteru and the soft-traders alike.

As soon as he turned 16 with his siblings and had his Coming Out ball (the event of the season, given the Presentation of five children wrought by magic), Ran cajoled Modis into taking him on as an apprentice both as a wizard and in saececraft. He was a diligent student of magic, but he took the most joy in his lessons in saececraft. He was so proud when he was able to accompany Tyanda to the Temple of Beauty to walk in his first Processional of Manifest Beauty.

It was a disaster.

While people say there are as many types of saece as there are grains of sand on the sea, that does not mean that everyone has a path to becoming Queen of Vaeteru. Ran was too excited to hear the whispers at first, but it didn’t stay that way for long. His jaw was too square, his gait too manly. His shoulders and chest were too broad, and his tallness was a man's height, not a woman's. He would never reach the pinnacle of feminine beauty pleasing to Sune. He would always look like a man in a dress – no matter how expensive the frock or how skilful the makeup was applied. He was crushed.

Adulthood

The next morning Ran gave his Da a hug and informed him that saececraft wasn’t what he expected and wasn’t for him. He donated his frocks and wigs to some soft-traders he knew and that afternoon joined the Pankratium Triumphant. If his shoulders were too broad he would make them broader. If his thighs were too thick he would make hem thicker. As a wizard he had no real hope of winning against the paladins and fighters who spend hours a day practicing, but he took up wrestling at the gymnasium, and broke his nose several times in the process. He allowed it to heal without magic so it would stay crooked. He would be as far away from the perfect saece as he could.

But that doesn’t mean he left Vaeteru. Far from it.

Not only does Ran’s desires run to jacks over janes, but he doesn’t even blame Vaeteru or even the saece for his disappointment and humiliation. He blames the Temple of Beauty. So he studies his magic, and he exercises his body, and he plans.

Future Plans

Oh yes, he has plans. The temples of Waterdeep are always jockeying for prominence, and Ran is determined to make sure the Temple of Beauty falls to the bottom of the heap.

  • Stage One: Money and information are the lifeblood of Waterdeep, and his first stage uses that knowledge. During his early years in Vaeteru, Ran learned that the soft traders have never managed to organize into a guild. Ran wants to convince the Eltorchul and the Ilzimmer families to act as patrons of a new Sodality of Festhalls. By gaining the gratitude of the soft traders his family will gain coin and rumors whispered over the pillows of Waterdeep, and the soft traders have always made up a large amount of Vaeteru’s people thus assuring his place within the community.
  • Stage Two: For his second phase, he must turn to the House of Wonder. House Eltorchul as always had strong ties to their neighbor the House of Wonder, and members of Ran’s generation all have been invited to call Meleghost Starseer himself Uncle. To bring one temple low Ran must raise another high. The House of Beauty is the only Waterdeep temple that maintains hierodules. Ran must convince his Uncle Meleghost to allow at least two at the House of Wonder as well as a cleric dedicated to helping the newly formed Sodality of Festhalls due to their arcanators and arcanatrixes. The hierodule could even take on members of the Sodality as apprentices with their fees provided by the guild. But there in another reason the House of Wonder is perfect for Ran’s plan. While being dedicated to Mystra, the House of Wonder hosts the Shrine to Azuth as well.
    • Being a curious child, Ran often wandered across the alley to the House of Wonder and as such became quite conversant with the calendar at the temple. Late in Mirtul, the Shrine to Azuth hosts a small, and completely overlooked and under-attended, Festival of Potions, Unguents, and Elixirs. The House of Wonder has always resented that they did not have more influence of the Watchful Order of Magists & Protectors so Ran wants to hand his Uncle two other guilds instead: his Sodality, and the Guild of Apothecaries and Physicians (which includes alchemists). By enticing these two guilds to patronize the competition the profile and revenue of the House of Wonder will raise immensely.
  • Stage Three: And finally, this is how Ran will bring the Temple of Beauty low. The Temple of Beauty has no major event on the Waterdeep season and needs the revenue of the saece attendance and the hierodule to maintain its current level. If the Festival of Potions, Unguents, and Elixirs can become an event of makeup and illusion artistry the Temple of Beauty will be in trouble. After that Ran can leave it to his Uncle Meleghost. With two guilds under his influence, Ran has no doubt that his Uncle will make his temple rise to the top. Too wide shoulders they said? Well fuck them – see who listens now.

Tarrak Zulpair
Ex-Paramour
Tarrak? We’ve been friends since we could hold our own heads up. Our nannies would walk us together. We said our first words to each other. We shared our first kiss with each other. We shared all of our secrets with each other. Well, not all. I mean, I only found out that he was tasmar when I caught him with Jhessail. I hear they are happy together. Maybe I should find out if Sarastyn is single….
Ilill-tesper.jpg
Ilill Tesper
Childhood Friend
Ilill is so slight, and so pretty most people underestimate him. I’d say that’s his greatest weapon, but I’ve seen him use his blades so I can’t. We use to run around together on Diamond Street Illill, Tarrak, and I with Morn trailing after us. We were thick as thieves. Tarrak, Morn, and I were always tall for our age, and I’m sure people assumed that we protected Ilill, but that wasn’t the case. He protected us. I still don’t know where he keeps all of those knives. The Coming Out ball for my siblings and I was originally supposed to rival Ilill’s, but I couldn’t do that to him. I must have talked Uncle Arus’s ears off until he agreed to change the date. Instead we ended up overshadowing some scion of House Roaringhorn. I wonder what ever happened to her?
Odelinda-plaicher.jpg
Odelinda Plaicher
Owner of the Sumptuous Masque
What, did you expect me to say I preferred The House of Purple Silks just because they are in the Sea Ward? They may have the location, but they don’t have Odelinda. She is the pinnacle of class, and I am convinced she must have noble blood in her lineage. When I was younger she never treated me like a child, and though I’ve never seen it she must be deadly; to run a business as she does? Plus she keeps a bottle of White Magic chilled behind the bar for me. What more could I want?
