Background

Harold Faithful, a wealthy investment banker, and Penelope Channing, the heiress to the her family's fortune had everything. Penelope became independently wealthy when she finally came of age to tap into the family trust. It was then that she met Harold Faithful who was known to the social elite as the best investment advisor in New England. His uncanny ability to know the highest yielding investments and how to manage people's assets was a wonder to behold. When Penny and Harold wed in 1993 it was the social event of the year. In 1994 Penny bore their first and only child, Matthew Faithful. He was given the best education that his family's fortunes could buy. It was no surprise when he was accepted to Brown in 2011 to study ancient history.

Matthew had just finished his masters degree in paleolithic culture, when he was granted access to the restricted section of the library at Brown University, ostensibly to begin his doctoral work. Three stories below ground, through a key carded gate, was the cage for rare and restricted books. It was in that cage that he discovered codices detailing the ancient wars between Atlantis and Lemuria, providing details hidden away from public knowledge. It was in these codices, and the accompanying note files from previous researchers, that he came to believe that ancient Atlantis still existed. Using the money his parents had put aside for his first PhD year he crossed the country to seek out the Atlanteans.

Through the legends and local rumors, his journey took him to Washington state. While doing additional research into the Atlantean/Lemurian conflict at the University of Washington, the director of university libraries, Rex Holden, took notice of his area of study and directed him to her best known organization to advance his research: the Seattle chapter of The Library, to which he immediately became a member. The Seattle library, located on Bainbridge Island is contained within the Bainbridge Island History Museum. The librarian, Morgan Wise, a Haida woman of the Raven clan, processed his membership on the recommendation of Mr. Holden. With the assistance of Ms. Wise, Matthew was able to locate a modern Atlantean cult operating in Yakima, Washington, led by a charismatic woman who channels the spirit of an Atlantean sorceror known as Ha-Ke-Ra.

Upon arrival in the lush horse country of central Washington he was greeted by two of the cultists of Ha-Ke-Ra. Matthew understood that there was something compelling him, as if he had a connection to these people, though they had never met before. With knowing looks between the two cultists they provided Matthew with the directions to the horse ranch that Ha-Ke-Ra uses as his training ground for initiates. The following day he arrived at the ranch and was greeted by the two acolytes he met in town. They ushered him into the teaching hall, a large open gazebo where Ha-Ke-Ra was speaking to a group of nearly a hundred men and women engaged in his teachings. After the session ended he was presented before Ha-Ke-Ra and tears streamed down his eyes. He could see the shimmering figure inhabiting this woman's body, and the spirit extended his arms to embrace Matthew. Within that embrace he could see the images of his mother and father and the generations of family leading back thousands of years, all the way back to Atlantis. In that moment he understood why this story had engaged him so deeply, he was a scion of Atlantis.

Under the tutelage of Ha-Ke-Ra he learned to unlock the magic forces deep in his Atlantean bloodline. Over the course of several years of continual learning, testing, and challenges he learned to master a suite of magic of illusion, force, mind, and healing. However, the cult of Ha-Ke-Ra was operating outside of the bounds of the law. While Joy Karras, the channeler of Ha-Ke-Ra understood this she held conflicting beliefs on the matter. The farm itself was run as a church, which generally kept government officials out of the picture. But the threat of AEGIS operatives cracking down, she instituted a rule to maintain only two acolytes in training at any one time to minimize any potential threat of crackdown. In order to accept a new acolyte, the eldest acolyte is sent off into the world to use their powers to help people, and to be ready to fight against the forces of Lemuria and her awakened descendants.

Matthew was sent forth from the compound in 2019, settling in Portland where he was recruited by Max Mars to research how to combine magic and technology.
