Background

Where did your character grow up? He grew up in Boston, in a rough blue-collar neighborhood. He still has a bit of a Boston accent when he talks, although he tries to hide it when he can. He learned that while sometimes you need to be willing to scrap to get what you need, more often than not paying attention and thinking ahead can avoid the fight in the first place.

Does your character have any family? Both of his parents died about five years ago; his mother died a few weeks after his father's funeral. He has a sister in Boston, but he hasn't spoken to her since the last funeral.

Your character has, at some point in his life, had something to do with the Hotel Regina. Tell me what the Hotel means to your character. His parents took their honeymoon in Astoria, and have some pictures of the hotel in their scrapbook (which Winter has stuck in a closet somewhere).

Describe your character’s Awakening. Winter was a beat cop, out of the academy for a few years. One night, he left work a little early so he could surprise his wife on their anniversary. He came home to find his house torn apart and his wife and infant son strangled. The sheer randomness of such a life-changing event caused him to Awake to the Realm of Arcadia, to the Arcana of Fate and Time. No evidence was ever found to pin it on a suspect, and he soon took the detective’s test to transfer to homicide while he learned from his mentor about his new life as a mage.

How has the Awakening changed your character, other than the obvious kewl powerz? He thinks he was meant to believe that since Fate and Time are larger forces that he should come to terms with the death of his wife and son. But in reality it's shown him that Fate and Time can be altered, and so all he needs to do is find the right combination of spells or the right level of power, and he can undo what was done.

Occult Senses

  • Unseen Senses: When Winter's Unseen Senses trigger, he gets a sharp pain in an old gunshot wound in his shoulder.
  • Temporal Eddies: Winter's Time-based Mage Sight filters visual input through the events of his life, as if everything he has ever done has led to this moment. Images of time (clocks, calendars, the buzzing of alarms or tolling of bells) twist and merge with the perception. Much of this input is based on memories associated with such events in his past.
