A Male Halfling Rogue Adventurer

Background
Gerrin grew weary of pies both in the fields and the windows of his kinfolk. Clearly, if he were to gain the riches and respect of the realm he would need to travel. His feet itched with wanderlust and his ego craved power. One affliction was fairly common, the other he chose to keep to himself. People tend to argue with you when you want to dominate them. Simple people love to argue.

Heading west to Ree he was convinced power would unfold like a lily to his touch. Instead he found a ramshackle city with slightly less fame and glory to offer than what he was looking for. It had some fairly interesting people and stories - perhaps a few ruins here and there - but nothing seemed to really pique his interest.

Less than a year after he arrived in Ree a caravan showed up. This might just be the ticket to a greater avenue of adventure!

Connections to other characters
Aidan Stormcrow - Aidan is the son of the town blacksmith who, many years ago, went crazy and slaughtered his family. Aidan is 'the boy who lived.' Apparently the town is waiting for him to lose his marbles just like his daddy did. Still, I'll play nice and try to learn Dwarven from him. Having a title like, 'Gerrin who learned Dwarven from a crazy person' might make me sound more menacing.

Sorlandira Amneshai - Sorlandira is an elf. AN ELF! oh how MARVELOUS to know an elf! She's quite stunning really. She's very well read and very charming. She assisted me when that daft caravan leader wouldn't listen to me. (I was going to shank him a whole bunch of times.) I hate to say it, but I hope we can be friends. There is quite a lot I'd love to learn from her.

Marak Bolduum - He's a good guy really. I haven't quite decided whether he's smarter than he lets on though. He seems to like his cups. He's got some strange notion about how holy thieves tools can be. The notion sounds ridiculous but truly it makes me uneasy. I shouldn't tick off any potential deities because I want to be as powerful as one. Step carefully. He's also the welcoming party the local thief's guild sent for me. I have no desire to share my skills with or around such a silly organization. Honor among thieves indeed! As long as the person muttering the phrase comes out on top!
Ericdabearhttps://oakthorne.net/wiki/index.php?title=Gerrin&diff=10005Gerrin2012-02-24T17:05:04Z
Ericdabear: /* Connections to other characters */

Concept

My name was Scott but it seems I haven't been called that in hundreds of years. I was a second-rate model in New York City. Imagine that, someone who DIDN'T aspire to the stage! I enjoyed the fast pace and the packed-in city. Los Angeles was just too spread out. People in New York always let you know where you stand. People on the west coast had no backbone; it was all slime.

I was just starting to realize my time was up as far as a shot at the business of the young and pretty. I wasn't really upset about it. I'm not the type to get upset about things. I take what I can learn and I move on. I won't lie though, waking up to the necessity of a new career in your mid-thirties (uhh.. late thirties) is not a very soothing prospect.

Being on the 'less-than-A-list' in your field generally meant you had a living arrangement. I shared a loft with a guy in Tribeca. We weren't much more than acquaintances, seeing each other in passing every day or two. I never really knew what he did for a living but whatever it was it did him well. He slept til noon and dressed very well. I never got the idea he was into drugs (or, at least, couldn't handle his scene) but he didn't have that air of a trust fund baby either.

The guy was hot. It didn't matter what your preferred gender was, you couldn't help but notice him. He had different women every night, sometimes more than one a night and sometimes even more than one at a time. I swear sometimes I heard guys, too. Given his ...own mystique and that of the people he was banging, I couldn't help but wonder what was going on behind that door. Maybe that's how he sustained himself. A guy with that ability could probably go pretty far if he wanted to.

I started to wonder about my own ability to maybe swing a few bucks that way. I'm a model! Well, soon-to-be ex-model turning 39. I'm not obsessed with staying young or pretty, I think it's just my environment. I hope I find a good next environment.

From listening to those nightly activities to wondering those momentary thoughts I'd catch myself in the mirror. Whatever the next environment might be, it should come fast.

I'd slide my way up to the roof with a half-bottle of Merlot where I could take in the city noises and then drown them out. Lady Liberty would be visible to her shoulders over the tops of the building. I'd focus on the back of her head and wonder, "What good is Liberty without direction?"

At a young age Torq discovered he didn't belong anywhere. Born to a whore and a drug addict didn't give you much for a hold on reality. It was the late 70s and New York's Times Square wasn't nearly as Disney-fied as it is now. By the time he was 12 memories of his parents were simply fights in the hours between hangovers and 'business'. At 13 in 1984 dear old dad split and mom was suffering from her years Torq became a ward of the state.

This was a joke of course, the homes were all run by corrupt money grabbers who didn't really care how you lived or breathed; just that you continued to do so. Many a night was spent on the streets of New York. During more prosperous evenings he would emulate the far-off glazed, doll-like stare he would see on his mother's face as she went to work and he watched through the slats of the bedroom closet. He wasn't being used if he wasn't there. There wasn't much his body was good for anyway. He wasn't strong enough to do the kind of damage his mind wanted to inflict. Then again, who really cared about anything.

Battery Park was always an interesting place to go at night. Most of his money was earned (aptly enough) by appetites in the financial district nearby. The park was a place to relax and see the 'outside world'. New Jersey never seemed like a place anyone wanted to go from what you heard and saw on the television. But it was still somewhere else. Why did the Statue of Liberty stand there? Was it the apathy that liberated him? Were the people beyond the island's borders liberated? They seemed to pour into the city quickly enough but they never stayed. Obviously the choice to leave must be a part of liberty. He couldn't be the liberated one then. What was he captive to?

Theme Song: Control, by Poe

Once upon a time – because all proper stories start that way – there were six little faeries, who may have been boys and girls once. Or perhaps, they were faeries that simply wanted to be boys and girls, and were brought back home by the Master of the Estate.

Now, the Master of the Estate was wise and terrible and beautiful to look on, and he loved the things in his life to be likewise. Beauty of this greatness requires a lot of work, and if there was anything the Master of the Estate hated almost as much as ugliness, it was hard work.

Fortunately, he was blessed with these six little faeries, and they worked very hard indeed. Of course, sometimes they were wicked little faeries and didn’t wish to work, so the Master of the Estate was forced to use his Sublime Chastisements upon them for being so lazy and ungrateful. On the other hand, other times they worked so hard that they became very ugly indeed, and he sorrowfully was forced to subject them to the Sublime Chastisements, to teach them the importance of beauty.

One day, while the Master of the Estate threw one of the great balls that he was justly revered and adored for by the Gentry, something terrible happened. The Master of the Estate had an enemy of such savageness and hideousness that something as wonderful and beauteous as the Master of the Estate had no choice but to declare it his foremost adversary! This terrible thing, the Reiver Most Fell, did something abominable – the attacked the Estate during the night of the ball!

Oh, the chaos! So many beautiful things were set on fire, or trampled upon, or spattered with the blood of stupid servants who didn’t know any better than to die near priceless artifacts. The Master of the Estate was terribly wroth, and while his noble guests fled for their own strongholds (many of the selfish, silly creatures assuming it was an attempt on their own unimportant lives), the Master of the Estate’s sterling tactical acumen and sublime fencing talents drew the Reiver Most Fell away from the Estate.

And in that moment, something terrible happened. The Estate was empty and unattended. And those wicked, deceitful, ungrateful little faeries – do you know what they did?

Yes. They ran away.

Oh, how wroth the Master of the Estate will be when he finds them again. How wroth, indeed. The Wheel of the Year may turn ever onward, but the Master of the Estate will not stop searching for them. Oh, no.
Not until he's found them again.

Premise
"Wheel of the Year" is a Changeling: the Lost chronicle intended for up to six players.

I will be running this chronicle once a month at most, on a weekend when Mandy (and Keith, who asked to sit out, and possibly play the occasional Storyteller Character) can make it down.

As such, some of the game will take place via the wiki and email. This is where I'll be doing "information dumps" and other sorts of things that I don't want to waste time during game to do. This means that part of participation in this game involves active participation on that electronic forum - if you aren't going to be able to spare the time to play the game fully, I'll understand; that's how things go.

I want to get together for a character creation session rather than having everyone create characters separately. I know this means basically getting started with the game a little later, but you will not only be creating your characters - you will be creating the Master of the Estate, from whom you escaped, and helping to define his Sublime Punishments, the Estate itself and the kinds of duties you did there that led to your transformation into a full Changeling.

You will also be creating and playing one anothers' Fetches, the faerie entities who thought they were your character while your character was in Arcadia. We'll determine this by random lottery, so I'm going to want everyone there to be able to listen to one anothers' character concepts and backstories which we can just assume that all of you, by dint of having known one another for the time you spent with the Master of the Estate, know of one another.

As such, we'll also be going through Fetch character creation. :)

I'll be posting the kinds of Changelings that are available for play (including Kiths not included in the core book) to the wiki here in the next couple of days. In the meantime, if you're interested in playing, please start thinking about the following questions:

1. Who was your character before s/he was taken by the Master of the Estate? All of you come from or were stolen from New York City.

2. Why was your character stolen? Specifically, what talents or traits did the Master of the Estate see in you that caused him to snatch you up and carry you away to Arcadia?

3. It was your memory of the Statue of Liberty that drew you back through the Hedge and into New York. Make sure you come up with a good reason in your backstory why the Statue of Liberty was such an important memory that your character clung to it the way s/he did.

This means, as an aside, that your character concept can span the years from 1886 to the modern day; do note that most Changelings who've been gone longer than fifty years almost never find their ways back, but you're PCs, so you're the exception. No more than one or two of you older than that fifty year mark, please. I hate games that focus too much on Anachronistic People Out of Place In the Wacky Modern World! It's a little too cheesy for my taste. One or two - especially if you've got a cool reason to use an older character - is okay, though.

Thirsting First Thunder was born to a moderately prosperous trading family. Their chief commodity was textiles and the accouterments that went with it such as beads and needles. His mother and father worked equally at their trade as well as individually amongst the people. It was not very difficult to observe however, that his mother was more skilled at her trade yet often went without the finery she sold and frequently walked amongst the platforms and bridges with a new bruise every once in a while.

Throughout his childhood Thunder would often find himself staying away from home for understandable reasons. Frequently he would be seen alone at the edge of the furthest outskirts, clinging to a tree and squeezing it for all he was worth, looking for the affection he couldn't find elsewhere. When other children would approach he would quickly run away, terrified of the beating he may incur.

It took a while for him to become accustomed to other children of course, and for this reason he was frequently picked on and berated and chosen last for any activity when the other children were given free rein. When Thirsting First Thunder was seven and only just beginning to learn the ways of being the man he'd grow up to be, he was presented with a baby sister.

For three years he nurtured and cared for a thing weaker than himself. For three years he grew to resent his parents for lacking the skills he so naturally came in to. Every day while he was off learning how to hunt and explore the various trades he might undertake he dreaded leaving her in their care. He was right to do so.

Many of the people who attended her funeral knew of the shortcomings in the family home, but were either too scared or too busy to do anything about it. I would suppose there are fewer people still who know the truth as I do about what changed in Thirsting First Thunder's heart that day.

I watched with him grow up with my own pair of children's eyes. At first I was intrigued about a boy that would not play with the others. I wondered what secrets he would whisper to the trees. I wondered what colors he saw the world in. As we grew up I started to wonder more things like what his smile might look like and how his cheek might feel against my lips. The happiness in his life while his sister lived and then the sorrow of her loss only bound me more tightly to him.

Throughout the next few years I tried my best to console him and to give him the space he needed while gently trying to infer that I was available to him should he make that choice. He seemed appreciative of the gesture and the attention, even moving on several occasions to hold my hand. He never really spoke much though and he always looked at things only he could see, hundreds of miles away. Sometimes there were tears but mostly there was hurt ... and rage.

Shortly after his fourteenth birthday he was presented with a special recognition by Elder Cobalt Monkey. Thirsting was a distinctive cut above the rest of his peers at hunting and woodsmanship. He was given a delicately carved statue showing him in action, carved with admiration by the Elder himself. It signified his desire of this chosen trade and most importantly it gave him hope that one day soon he'd be free of his past and he could start anew.

When he arrived home the presentation and subsequent statement that he would not continue in his father's footsteps did not sit at all well with the man. As a matter of fact, it did not sit at all. The hope I felt for Thunder while watching from a few paces away melted into horror as I watched the statue fall from the window of their home down, down, down to the forest floor. Then I heard the sound of a great scuffle and more breaking wood. I ran for the door but his mother reached it a step before I did and caught my eye then looked down and shut the door.

His broken arm took several months to heal. He trained with the rest of his body as vigorously as he could. The sorrow and hurt was gone. Now there seemed only rage. Thankfully (and blindly) I thought my presence soothed his vengeful spirit.

One day as I was coming back from further in the wood on my own training 'missions' I noticed him smiling greatly. I was so happy and excited to witness this event that I landed directly in front of him and smiled wide as well.

He said simply, "I am healed." Then he kissed me hard and held me tight against his chest.

The chasm of sorrow one might feel when one's parents are pronounced dead from missing for almost a year was understandably absent. As a matter of fact people tried to covertly congratulate Thirsting First Thunder on being able to start fresh while offering their condolences. Also, only a week before the announcement was made we had announced our engagement.

It was also during this time that I was coming into my own stride as a great hunter and master of the woods. Elder Cobalt Monkey would often tease us and make comments about our future children being monkeys, having come from the two greatest athletes of the woods. At certain times it enhanced our courtship. The goal of finding each other in the branches was often too desirable and strenuous to find our way back to our beds at night. The trees were our kind now, they were our support - quite literally. Sometimes though, Thirsting First Thunder had problems with his shame if I hid too well and had to come looking for him, or if I found him too quickly. Other times it seemed as if he'd disappeared altogether.

Speaking of disappearances, it was shortly after his parents disappearance that other started disappearing as well. To lose people in such a way is not unheard of and it wasn't on an epidemic scale, but it was still odd enough to notice. Those of us with skill amongst the trees searched vigorously and as time went on we came to suspect less and less that we'd find those missing.

One night, four days until our wedding, I discovered the truth. I was walking back from visiting with my mother and heard a faint struggle and a quick noise. I drew my bow and knocked an arrow while hurrying to where I'd heard it just in time to see Thunder render a man unconscious. I couldn't help myself and I gasped at what I'd seen.

When he turned to face me I didn't recognize my fiance. I didn't recognize him as he turned quickly and quietly on his heels, as he rose from his crouch and brought his weapon against me. It was too late to run when my gaze was forcibly removed by faltering instinct to focus on the weapon that was already coming down toward me.

When I awoke it was clearly daylight and my head was blazing with pain. I was in a dark burlap sack that was tied completely below me. My hands and feet were also bound within this cocoon. The only reason I didn't awake sooner was that I did not have the benefit until then of being dragged feet first through a rocky riverbed. The pounding of my head was doubled as it was dragged across large river stones. As I heard and felt the footfalls go up wooden stairs, I knew what was about to happen.

When we reached the end of the pier I tried to breathe deeply through the gag and wrestle with my bonds. My desperation was immediate and intense. I suppose Thirsting Asshole thought it would be fitting to 'bury' me with my bow. I can't call him an idiot though, since I couldn't reach it with bound hands. The only thing I could think to do was hold on. The only thing I could hold on to was him. As he dumped my soon-to-be corpse into the river I cradled his arm in the arches of my feet and yanked him down head over feet in front of me into the water.

For a few seconds I had my moment, but he delivered a blow to the proper part of my body that quickly expelled the air from my lungs. He was intent on not being discovered and actively pushed and held me down, underwater.

When my vision and my strength ebbed as far as I thought they could, it happened. I received my exaltation.

"Child of the Unconquered Sun" said a voice as deep and as green and great as the wood, "listen."

The sudden relaxation of my body was all the proof my soon-to-be ex-fiance needed and he started swimming to the shore. I lay still for what seemed like an hour, basking in the glory of Truth and Wisdom. It filled my lungs with the air of Divinity and I was given purpose.

My purpose is to be the Hand of the Will. For too long the world has spiraled into chaos and it has become too distasteful for Goodness. I was given a boon and a blessing at that moment when my eyes and my brain and my body were failing me. At the moment the voice stopped and I returned to my true surroundings my nature was revealed.

From the depths of the river came a great swelling like a large bullet splitting the river in two. Through my bonds and through the burlap I could see it clearly. When it met my skin I knew exactly what would happen.

In one movement the great bear engulfed me and rent my bonds and gently sat me upon its back. I continued through the motion to a crouching position and as it broke through the water I drew my bow and leapt into the air as high as I could. I wanted to get as high as I could so that he'd have time to see what was going on. He wouldn't understand it fully, I'd only let him get to the point when he realized the air in his lungs was all he'd ever get.

I retreated down the river a ways, away from the dock. I needed to hide and figure things out. I couldn't go home, not being 'anathema' and all. Yet I wanted to so badly - to see my family again and to tell them the evil was passed - to be amongst my things and weep. My life now serves a higher purpose now though and I must use my skill and my gifts to make things right again. And right by me again.
Ericdabearhttps://oakthorne.net/wiki/index.php?title=Homework-NPCs&diff=4153Homework-NPCs2008-06-17T17:26:33Z
Ericdabear: /* Whispering Bear */

Okay.

As you guys can tell, Mahanaga is starting to feel a little small right now. So, I'd like you guys to turn your attention to the bigger world, as well as to your character's past.

There are people with whom your character has interacted in the world, obviously. I'd like to know who these people are. Some ideas to get you started:
* Lover: Describe a character that your character has been intimate with. While in theory your character could have had relations with just about anyone else on this list, this person is someone with whom your character's primary relationship was that of sexual intimacy and possibly even close romantic affection.
* Family: Describe a relative that has had a profound influence on your character's life. It isn't good enough to have a sibling that you grew up with - this sibling must have been someone you loved dearly, or absolutely hated, or a parent whose unconditional love or scathing criticism left a lasting impression on who your character has become.
* Mentor/Master: A figure of authority and possible vocational instruction, describe for me a teacher, mentor, master or even an owner (for those who have experienced slavery).
* Student: Describe an individual that has looked up to your character for instruction or wisdom. Who have they since gone on to become?
* Rival: This is someone who isn't a full-blown enemy. Rather, this is someone who sought to always one-up you, make you look bad or even simply belittled you constantly by just being better than you and being perky about it at the same time (those are the fucking worst). Who is this person?
* Good Friend: Tell me who your character's BFF is. The bosom friend, in whom your character can confide, the one you always got into trouble with, the one who provided your alibi when you were out getting in to trouble, or the rascal that you liked enough to cover for sometimes.
* Sidekick: Describe the character who looked up to you as his or her ideal of some kind. You were awesome in their eyes, and they followed you around trying to get in your good graces.
* Hero: Alternately, this is someone that your character idealized, a person whose incredible skills, perfect bearing, great wisdom or just sheer all around awesomeness drew in your character's attention (and maybe even a little bit of worship).
* Good Samaritan: This is someone that suddenly showed up one day, when your character was in a rough situation, and lent a kind helping hand with no reason - or maybe only a small reason. Alternately, this is someone that you served as that helping hand to.
* Servant/Slave: This is someone your character has tremendous authority over - maybe even ownership over. But it's not just any schmuck maid or concubine, mind you. There should be something that makes this character stand out, despite their lowly station.

Assignment
Detail up to three characters. I'd like a name and description of each, as well as why they are relevant to your character. I'd prefer that each one was from a different category (as above).

Reward: Each character will be worth 1 xp. Like the previous homework, I will be telling you how those XP can be spent, though. I will say that the XP will be apportioned up towards things that the character is relevant to; if you tell me about the old savant that taught you all about spirits, your big brother that used to take you camping all the time, and your best friend who was a sparring partner, I'm probably going to give you 1 XP for Occult (and related Charms), 1 XP for Survival (and related Charms) and 1 XP for Melee (and related Charms).

Alternately, if the character is noteworthy enough, or I decide has some appropriate influence, I may decide to hand out a dot or so in new Backgrounds.

So, fair warning. :)
