While early Sullustans were limited to occupying inactive lava tubes and natural caverns, their engineering prowess has tamed their hostile environment. Sullustan cities have nothing to fear from volcanic eruption: shunts divert lava to the surface after passing through geothermal energy collectors. The abundance of lava provides for most of Sullust's energy needs, and shielded geothermal power plants speckle the surface to power the lights of underground cities.

Early on in this conflict, a group of Corellian diplomats were sent to mediate. Jedi Master Even Piell also accompanied them as an observer and in his post as Jedi Watchman of Lannik. The Sullustans run SoroSuub Corporation, one of the largest corporations in the Galaxy. While SoroSuub exports a variety of products throughout the galaxy, it also manufactures and sells almost all consumer goods on Sullust and employs ninety percent of Sullust's workforce. SoroSuub enjoys a vertical monopoly: it mines, designs, manufactures, transports, and even sells its own products throughout the galaxy. As a result, Sullustans are a common sight almost anywhere, most often transporting SoroSuub goods to far-flung worlds.

With the rise of the Empire, however, many of the old anti-authoritarian tendencies among modern Lannik culture bubbled to the surface, and the nascent Imperial presence on Lannik was actually wiped out by a series of terrorist attacks that claimed the lives of the Imperial governor and certain Intelligence assets. These terrorists claimed to be the Red Iaro returned.

While SoroSuub has long dominated Sullustan society, by the time of the Clone Wars it was powerful enough to mandate joining the Separatist cause over the objections of the government, known as the Sullustan Council. When the Separatists collapsed, the company quickly reformed itself, becoming a staunch supporter and ally of the Empire. As many Sullustans opposed the Empire, SoroSuub dissolved the Sullustan Council and took direct control of the government.

A significant percentage of Sullustans continue to oppose the Empire. The human-centric attitudes and actions irritate and anger the Sullustans. Their opposition to these attitudes and totalitarian policies is slowly influencing SoroSuub decision-making. However, some are unwilling to wait for corporate minds to change and are establishing resistance groups of their own.

Sullust is a volcanic world on the inner edge of the Outer Rim, in the Trailing Sectors bordering the Western Reaches. The noxious surface of ash, lava, and toxic gases make Sullust an unlikely home for intelligent life, but the native Sullustans evolved in an underground ecosystem.

The atmosphere is a roiling mix of noxious clouds and gases. The gax mix in a given area may change radically depending on the winds and the density of the substances involved. Those who venture onto its surface are advised to carry breath masks at the very least, and fully enclosed environmental protection suits in the worst areas.

* '''Umnub:''' Barren and largely abandoned, Umnub was once a major source of raw materials for SoroSuub but it has long since been tapped out.

* '''Sulon:''' Sulon bustles with activity, and its spaceport dwarfs those on Sullust. Most of Sullust's food is grown on Sulon and shipped down to the planet. SoroSuub maintains a lavish retreat near the spaceport for business meetings with offworlders. The potential loss of life threatened by a subterranean ordnance accident on Sullust prompted SoroSuub to move certain high-risk operations to Sulon. Weapons manufacturing and testing facilities occupy what little land isn't used for agriculture.

Lannik has remained aloof from galactic governments for many generations. Unlike most other Republic planets, the considerable natural resources and mineral wealth of Lannik were largely unmined and unexploited, making it a tempting prize for enterprising would-be manipulators. Under the Galactic Empire, Lannik remains largely isolated, although there is an increased Imperial presence in recent years.

The Lannik High Council & Red Iaro

The Lannik High Court was the ruling body of the planet Lannik in the years before the Clone Wars. During the reign of prince R'cardo Sooflie IX's father, an insurgent terrorist group called the Red Iaro began a long and bloody civil war. Early on in this conflict, a group of Corellian diplomats were sent to mediate. Jedi Master Even Piell also accompanied them as an observer and in his post as Jedi Watchman of Lannik. However, when the Corellian diplomats were finally able to meet with the Lannik High Court, the Red Iaro attacked. Master Piell was able to defeat all of them, but at the cost of his left eye.

The war raged on for many years until eventually the two parties were ready to talk again. They met on the planet Malastare where a failed assassination plot by the Iaro left their leader dead, and the rest of the organization scattered. Because of this, the unpopular High Court under R'card Sooflie IX was restored to power.

Imperial Occupation

With the rise of the Empire, however, many of the old anti-authoritarian tendencies among modern Lannik culture bubbled to the surface, and the nascent Imperial presence on Lannik was actually wiped out by a series of terrorist attacks that claimed the lives of the Imperial governor and certain Intelligence assets. These terrorists claimed to be the Red Iaro returned.

The Imperial response was predictably draconian, and one of the first public missions of Darth Vader was to round up the membership of Red Iaro and publicly execute them. Once the Lord of the Sith departed, he left in his wake an Imperial presence with orders to keep the peace. By and large, the execution of Red Iaro and the subsequent Imperial peacekeeping measures have churned Lannik sensitibilities, and when Padmé Amidala came to Lannik to help them form an insurgency group, she found unheard of support from the Lannik people. Though not all of them joined the Lannik Insurgency, many of them support it in various ways.
