Eetu and I raided a village together, along with a raiding party. This village was to the NW of the kingdom, in the mountains. Unknown to us, it was under the protection of something scary. The raiding party was captured, and the female leader made those who wanted their freedom go through a trial. Most of the party failed to pass, but we made it through, along two others. She returned the armor and weapons, and gave some gifts to those who made it through. We maintain a boon companion relationship after this - close friends and drinking buddies.

Ryken is probably an orphan. He was brought to the monastery as a very young child by a woman who died at the monastery soon thereafter. He has no memory of his parents, and all of his memories are of his life at the monastery. This was a rather austere life until going on the raid with Eetu. Going out to various bars with Eetu, he has obtained a taste for fine beers, especially an ice mead made by the Icewalkers.

Eetu has taken it on himself to introduce me to the earthy side of life. I have always been fond of beer, but I had not had so many varieties as he has shown me in the taverns of Monument. Icewalker Mead is my favorite - strong, smooth, and spiced as only they can make it.
The other earthy delight I have discovered a taste for is female companionship. Of course, my introduction was embarrassing as any callow youth could dread. Eetu and I were out drinking and a pretty wench caught my eye, or so I thought. I am pretty sure I caught her eye, looking back, but all I knew at the time was that I had a delightful opportunity that I did not wish to pass by. We went upstairs together, and I was excited to begin when I realized she was a prostitute, not just a willing companion.
One time while out on the town with Eetu, he picked up a woman and took her to a room with him. He didn't realize that the woman was a prostitute until he got to the room. at which point he couldn't figure out how to back out of it. To this day, Eetu still gives him a hard time about this. He found that he enjoys sex, but doesn't intend on paying for it again. He also doesn't want any attachments right now, since relationships aren't something that he really understands, so he never picks up the same woman twice.

I don’t have a problem with prostitution, but it was still a shock. I was still afire and couldn’t think how to say no with grace, so we struck a deal and I discovered that I enjoyed her as much as Icewalker Mead. Naturally, Eetu got the story out of me within an hour of meeting downstairs again. He gets an unholy glee out of teasing me about it, but I haven’t killed him because he is both my friend and he hasn’t taken it too far. Yet.
I still enjoy such companionship, but I don’t pay for it. Mutual satisfaction is much more satisfying. But, I don’t ever return to the same woman. I did, early on, but found that she was becoming interested in something more than bedsport and I felt completely lost. I don’t really understand romance, courtship, or even ordinary family. It is simpler to keep such relationships short and satisfying. I don’t want to hurt anyone and I don’t think I can offer whatever it is they might want in addition to sex.

Background

My name is Ryken and I am a Priest of the Gods of Monument. I do not know my blood family, if I even have one. I was raised in the monastery after my mother died. I don’t remember her and never knew her name or place. I consider the monks to be my family and Soaring Hymn is my honored teacher.

It may be that I would have remained among the temples my whole life had not Yozi cultists stolen a statue commissioned for the temples. We tracked the cultists to their lair in the mountains and slew them all before they could complete their desecration.
Nothing was ever said, but my duties expanded after this expedition. I was sent on a raid led by Quartermaster Eetu.
