If a man can bridge the gap between life and death, if he can live on after he's dead, then maybe he was a great man.
-James Dean
Life and death are one thread, the same line viewed from different sides.
-Lao Tzu
Theme Song
Always look on the bright side of death...(Whistle)
a-Just before you draw your terminal breath...(Whistle)
Life's a piece of shit, when you look at it
Life's a laugh and death's a joke, it's true
You'll see its all a show, keep 'em laughin as you go
Just remember that the last laugh is on you
Aaaaaaaaaaaand...Always look on the bright side of life...(Whistle)
-From Life of Brian & Spamalot
Origin
Ophelia knew Reed was always a bit...different than the other children. Maybe it was a Halfling thing. The gods know they have peculiar ways, but Reed was not raised by other Halflings. His past was actually quite a mystery. She remembers finding the little guy at, what she guessed, age 10 wandering the shattered remains of a ruin of Liminal. He was shy and scared and those big hazel eyes made her heart melt. She would have taken him in anyway, her orphanage was built for exactly that purpose, but something about the little halfling made it virtually impossible. Reed reminded her too much of another lost little friend.
The children felt the same. Actually, the more she thought about it, everyone was drawn to him. He always would brighten up the room and laughter followed him everywhere...but he would also seem to disappear as soon as possible. Halflings are usually elusive just because of their size. Plus Reed was thin for a Halfling and a Lightfoot to boot!!
No matter how hard he was to find, when it came to story time he was the first one there. Always. He loved the stories about Sherman the best. A little too much maybe. From what Ophelia overheard from the children, he imagined Sherman a 10-foot-tall, powerful kobold, of epic proportions! He even named his pet mouse Sherman.
It just seemed so odd how mischief followed him, but he was never there when it all went down. If he was involved, and Ophelia was sure he was, the children seemed disinclined to finger him, even though she suspected he was the root of it all. That being said, Ophelia mused as she sipped her tea, the trouble that surrounded Reed was all pretty innocent. The missing bits of food and toys were always small and replaceable. When she first found the crumbs in his pockets she doubled his food rations. She was horrified at the thought he was going hungry. But he wouldn't eat the extra food and the small bits of food kept disappearing. The thing is....when the winter came and the food was scarce he must have stopped. If anything she kept finding food she didn't remember buying....that didn't make any sense at the time, but in the light of recent events....it all made sense.
The City Watchman was near screaming for answers and it was a good thing his partner was able to keep him in check. It was clear the pressure to catch Reed was coming down hard on them. She knew why of course... Mupert Rurdoch was endlessly rich. In fact whatever he lost probably didn't affect his wealth one bit. Knowing him, he probably MADE money when it was all said and done but his honor...that is what he wanted returned to him. He needed to make an example out of Reed.
Ophelia hadn't needed to lie. She hadn't seen Reed in over a year. A month earlier she found a tightly bound parcel on bedside. Inside was a number of gold pieces...enough to feed the children for months and a single black leaf on top.
She worried about the young halfling as she looked into the wet tea leaves. She wished she could see into the leaves to see if he was ok and on a good path. She wished she could have understood him better to maybe help him on his path. She wished a lot of things.

Traits
Personality Traits
- "I hide scraps of food and trinkets in my pockets"
- "I ask a lot of questions"
- Sexuality: Reed is omni-sexual of sorts, but very innocent too. He has always found women hard to relate to, a wonderful romanticized mystery, and able to make him completely incoherent...which also explains why he has never been romantically involved with one. Men, however, are easy, which is why his few encounters usually are the result of gaining something, from access to a building, trading information or just sexual exploration/release. In his mind he sees women for relationships, and men to be used and enjoyed for pleasure, but he been in a relationship that lasted to the sunrise.
Halfling Traits
- Lucky: If you roll a 1 on an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw then reroll. Must take second roll.
- Brave: Advantage on saving throws against being frightened.
- Nimbleness: Move through any creature larger.
- Lightfoot: +1 to Charisma; Can attempt to hide behind a creature one size larger than me.
Rogue Traits
- Expertise: Choose two skill proficiencies and double the bonus.
- Sneak Attack: Once per turn deal extra xd6 damage to one creature you hit with an attack if you have advantage on the attack roll. The attack must use finesse or a ranged weapon. You don't need advantage if another enemy of the target is within 5 feet of it (and not incapacitated), and you don't have disadvantage on the attack roll.
- Thieves' Cant: Can convey secret messages/read secret signs/symbols to and from others who understand the Thieves' Cant
Assassin Traits
- Bonus Proficiencies: You gain proficiencies with disguise and poisoner's kit
- Assassinate: You have advantage on attack rolls against any creature that hasn't taken a turn in the combat yet. In addition, any hit you score against a creature that is surprised in a critical hit.
Urchin Feature
City Secrets: You know the secret pattern and flow to cities. When you are not in combat you and companions you lead can travel between any two locations twice as fast as your speed would normally allow.

Resources
- Moneys: I hoard the moneys but give it freely to people who have helped me. I refuse to be in debt to those I love.

- Stored Equipment: I have hiding places throughout the city but would be unlikely to hide anything personal, or valuable (unless no alternative).
- Lifestyle: I have lived in wretched conditions but am more accustom to poor and modest lifestyles.
Other Important Individuals
- Ophelia: Was a gutter rat, and friend of Sherman. She was trained by her mother to be a lady of the evening and got "promoted" to practice prostitution in hell. She was rescued by Sherman and lived with him while she tried to figure out what to do with her life. When Liminal fell apart, (curious timed when Sherman and his "friends" were out adventuring) Ophelia barely made it out alive. She was given the opportunity to take over a large abandon house and she converted it to an orphanage. She has been helping children as best she can ever since.
- Sherman: Sherman was...Sherman. He was a small, furry Kobold. He specialized in alchemy, magic, was not very strong, not very tall, and prefered things to be neat, clean, and organized. He also may have been...um...a little addicted to opiates and pink fizzy drinks.
- Reed's vision of Sherman: Sherman is a hero of heroes. He was tall, strong as ten orcs, a powerful wizard, and a leader of a great band of adventures. He was smart and strong and no mere man could hurt him! In fact the grand city of Liminal LITERALLY SHATTERED when Sherman disappeared from the world!! Oh my gods he is so freaking awesome. I will find out what happened to him!
* Sherman: Sherman is a mouse pet that has traveled with Reed for most of his life and named after Reed's idol. He lives in Reed's cloak, which Reed has sewn (rather poorly) little fabric tunnels throughout his cloak with little pockets Sherman can poke his head out of. These are separate from the pockets he stores things in, but sometimes Sherman gets into those too. Sherman has his own black cloak for when Sherman wants out of Reed's cloak. Reed communicates with Sherman regularly but it is unclear to others how one-sided this conversation is.
Projects, Goals and/or Downtime
- Reed needs to keep sustaining his modest lifestyle and refuses to burden others...so will try to find work...and well if he can't he is sure some people wont miss a few copper and silver coins here and there.
- Reed wants to start writing a journal just like Sherman and account all his amazing adventures...but first he has to find paper...and ink...er...and learn how to write better...(He learned the basics from Ophelia and reading Sherman's journal)
- Reed wants to continue to pay back Ophelia in coin, food, or favor until he feels like his debt to her is payed off. Which keeps growing the more he misses her.
