Rank • Spirit Rites

Banish (•)

This rite invokes the ritemaster's authority as guardian between the two worlds, casting intruders out from realms to which they do not belong.

  • Symbols: Warning, the two worlds, exile or refusal, the Wolf’s last howl; the Ban of a spirit must always be part of the rite in some capacity.
  • Action: Extended (target = 10; 1 roll per minute); spirits may contest with their Resistance
  • Success: This rite banishes a targeted spirit of a nation over which the ritemaster has influence from the physical world into the corresponding point in the Shadow. If targeting a physical creature in the Shadow that is not a spirit or a werewolf, the target is expelled into the corresponding point in the material world. The banishment is immediate unless there are any unusual characteristics present in the Gauntlet.

Center (•)

This rite permits the ritualist to center her spirit, shrugging aside all worldly concerns to focus on things of a spiritual nature. It is commonly performed before ritual work of any sort.

  • Symbols: Chants, hand gestures, delineation of self
  • Action: Extended (target = 5; 1 roll per minute)
  • Success: This rite grants the ritualist a +1 equipment bonus to a number of ritual rolls equal to her Resolve, as well as a point of Willpower upon its completion. These benefits may be gained only once per scene, and the equipment bonus must be used in that same scene.

Consecrate Space (•)

This rite purifies and blesses a space for the work of the ritualist ahead.

  • Symbols: Delineation of space, purification, blessing
  • Action: Extended (target = 5; 1 roll per minute)
  • Success: This rite imbues a location with a sympathy with a ritual about to be performed in that space. The ritual must be named as part of casting this ritual. The area itself counts as a potent symbol for the ritual's performance, granting a +1 bonus to all rolls for that ritual. It also grants a single use of the rote ability for the first roll of performing that ritual.

Call [NATION] Hursihim (••)

This rite is actually several different kinds of rite, each one aligned with a different Nation of spirits. When the rite is learned, the ritemaster learns the techniques for calling to hursihim (both hursih and hursah) of two Choirs within that Nation, and must research (Target Number 10) additional Choirs.

When performing the rite, the ritemaster may choose one of the following as the target of the rite:

  • The nearest hursihim of that Nation; the spirit that answers will be a hursihim of one of the Choirs the ritemaster is proficient with.
  • The nearest hursihim of a Choir within that Nation.
  • The nearest hursihim of specific type within a Choir and Nation known to the ritemaster.

The first version of this rite a ritemaster learns must be of the Nation he is aligned with. The normal mechanics for Spirit Dealings between nations apply to the rolls for this rite: the ritemaster gains +2 dice for Aligned spirits, +1 die for Allied spirits, +0 dice for Neutral spirits, and -1 die for Hostile spirits.

  • Symbols: Symbols appropriate to the Nation in question
  • Action: Extended (target = 10, 1 roll per ten minutes), resisted by the spirit's Resistance.
  • Success: A nearby gaffling hears the call and comes as quickly as it can. The area within the delineated space gains the Open Condition and the spirit appears in Twilight. If it has the Materialize Manifestation then it may use this power at no cost in Essence at the moment it appears.

Shadowcall (•••)

The need to obey the call is woven into the very fabric of a spirit’s flesh. This rite is the call.

  • Symbols: Circles, changes in perception, a call, lights, the spirit’s type
  • Cost: 5 Essence
  • Action: Extended (target = 20; 1 roll per minute); potentially contested by the spirit’s Resistance
  • Success: This rite can be targeted against a single known spirit by name. The spirit becomes immediately aware once the rite begins, and can try to resist or can voluntarily respond to the call. If the rite reaches the target number of successes before the spirit does, the spirit immediately appears within a delineated summoning spot where appropriate chiminage has been offered. Unlike most rites, the local Gauntlet strength does affect the dice pool for Shadowcall if the called spirit is on the other side of the Gauntlet to the ritemaster when the rite begins. If the summoning takes place in the material world, the area within the delineated space gains the Open Condition and the spirit appears in Twilight. If it has the Materialize Manifestation then it may use this power at no cost in Essence at the moment it appears.
