The Spring Moon Garden is an historical building that has stood since the early days of Chinese immigration to San Francisco. It once served as a stop-over point for new immigrants, providing housing, food and laundry services and serving as a place where people looking for Chinese laborers could stop in to hire those in fresh off the boats. These days, it serves much the same role, although it serves primarily those who are down and out, the very poor or students.
The building which houses the hostel is also host to a variety of businesses: an apothecary shop owned by Mr. Fung, a small noodle and steamed bun shop and the China Flower Restaurant. It is clear that the top floor serves as rooming for the hostel.
