Background
My name is Ryken and I am a Priest of the Gods of Monument. I do not know my blood family, if I even have one. I was raised in the monastery after my mother died. I don’t remember her and never knew her name or place. I consider the monks to be my family and Soaring Hymn is my honored teacher.
I take great pride in my duties. It is my privilege to serve in the temples, offering honor to the gods on behalf of the people of Monument and protecting them from any harm. I have heard that most cities do not have temples like ours, and I pity them for their lack. Our temples and our relationship with our gods are a great treasure must be protected.
It may be that I would have remained among the temples my whole life had not Yozi cultists stolen a statue commissioned for the temples. Forgemaster Jod and I had been sent to obtain it and I could not permit them to befoul any sacred object. We tracked the cultists to their lair in the mountains and slew them all before they could complete their desecration.
Nothing was ever said, but my duties expanded after this expedition. I was sent on a raid led by Quartermaster Eetu. It was standard raiding and should have been straightforward, but this village had a Guardian. I don’t know what she is, but we were all captured. The Guardian offered us a chance to gain our freedom if we completed a trial she set. Only four of us, including Eetu, survived. To my surprise, the Guardian not only freed us but gave us gifts, as well. I was given a fine suit of lamellar that I wear to this day. And, when I returned home, I had gained a brother.
Eetu has taken it on himself to introduce me to the earthy side of life. I have always been fond of beer, but I had not had so many varieties as he has shown me in the taverns of Monument. Icewalker Mead is my favorite - strong, smooth, and spiced as only they can make it.
The other earthy delight I have discovered a taste for is female companionship. Of course, my introduction was as embarrassing as any callow youth could dread. Eetu and I were out drinking and a pretty wench caught my eye, or so I thought. I am pretty sure I caught her eye, looking back, but all I knew at the time was that I had a delightful opportunity that I did not wish to pass by. We went upstairs together, and I was excited to begin when I realized she was a prostitute, not just a willing companion.
I don’t have a problem with prostitution, but it was still a shock. I was still afire and couldn’t think how to say no with grace, so we struck a deal and I discovered that I enjoyed her as much as Icewalker Mead. Naturally, Eetu got the story out of me within an hour of meeting downstairs again. He gets an unholy glee out of teasing me about it, but I haven’t killed him because he is both my friend and he hasn’t taken it too far. Yet.
I still enjoy such companionship, but I don’t pay for it. Mutual satisfaction is much more satisfying. But, I don’t ever return to the same woman. I did, early on, but found that she was becoming interested in something more than bedsport and I felt completely lost. I don’t really understand romance, courtship, or even ordinary family. It is simpler to keep such relationships short and satisfying. I don’t want to hurt anyone and I don’t think I can offer whatever it is they might want in addition to sex.
Shaping Ritual
When the sorcerer takes the first shape sorcery action to begin casting a spell and stunts it with a description of how she casts the spell through the talisman or draws on its power, she gains (stunt rating + 2) sorcerous motes towards completing this spell. This benefit can only be received once per scene. Stunts to enhance the sorcerer’s control spell do not count against the once per scene limit.
Shining Ice Mirror
Shining Ice Mirror is beautiful and minimalist by the standards of most daiklaves, with a thin, slightly curved jade blade the color of ice catching the afternoon sun and a hilt woven with the thinnest of precious starmetal wires. It’s a blade of deliberate nature, rewarding foresight in battle while disdaining those who hack and rend their way through their foes.
Evocations of Shining Ice Mirror
A Solar who pays two extra motes to attune to Shining Ice Mirror may partake of its perfect balance and discerning spirit so that an aim action taken with the intent to strike with the blade also conveys the benefits (but not costs) of a full defense action.
