History

Very much a fallen House, the Thanns have seen better days. In the times since the Spellplague, they lost all of their old merchant shipping resources as well as their vineyard and vintner holdings, to say nothing of nearly all of their old Tethyrian holdings.

They were among those who first picked back up on arcane lore and hired spellcasting as a House, however, quickly seizing up as vocation what had once simply been a familial talent. Part of this was, in the past thirty years, leaning on their old familial bloodties to Khelben Arunsun, which the Thanns are a little less boastful about now that Laeral acts as Open Lord.

Today, House Thann teeters on the verge of disaster. Just over a dozen in number, all of whom live in Waterdeep, the Thanns now strive to recover some of their lost prosperity.

Members of the Family

Main Branch

  • Lady Athue Thann: Matriarch (Renown 10) • 67 years. The Lady Thann is a wizard who has helped to cement her house's investment in magic as a trade. Though tall and straight-backed, she walks with a pronounced limp, the result of a youthful magical mistake that cost her dearly. Her grandfather and mentor in the magical arts, Chalos Thann, insisted that she retain the disfigurement, for which she never forgave him. Athue is herself a sharp and unforgiving mentor, insisting on near-perfection in her apprentices (although she does not quite verge on the cruelty of her own grandfather).
  • Inteth Thann: Consort (Renown 8) • 64 years. Athue's wife was a descendant of the old Thunderstaff family, though they'd lost their title by the time Inteth was born. It was Inteth who came to Athue's side with a bevy of old Thunderstaff papers that detailed part of their magical industry, and she who encouraged Athue to adopt them for the Thanns. Where Athue is tall and thin, Inteth is small and pleasantly rounded, with bright cheeks and twinkling eyes.
  • Antryn Thann: Heir, matriarch's firstborn son (Renown 8) • 39 years. A bard and socialite in the style of his ancestor, the notorious Open Lord Danilo Thann, Antryn is pleasant enough even when he isn't trying to win someone's favor. Though his mother can't quite see it in him, he does possess a mean streak, particularly when he doesn't get his way. Very few see this in him, however, save his wife (though he never directs it at her).
  • Dharis Thann: Antryn's consort (Rank 5) • 35 years. A daughter of House Moonstar, Dharis took a long time to decide what she thought of Antryn. She is insightful enough to see through his outer veneer of sweetness, and canny enough to give him plenty of rope to hang himself with. Despite taking a long time in their courtship and now marriage, though, he has never lashed out at her directly. She has decided that she can live with that trait in him, and seems to have fully settled into their marriage. She just announced that she is pregnant, to the House's delight as a whole.
  • Hlarutin Marulmeryn: Matriarch's companion (Renown 4) • 61 years. One of Chalos's other apprentices, Hlarutin fell in love with Athue while they were both in training with the old wizard. Unfortunately, while she regarded him as a dear friend, Athue did not return his love. Still, he remained by her side, a retainer to House Thann after Chalos's death, and she has never had cause to regret his presence there. Indeed, when forty years ago she and Inteth came to him wanting a child, he agreed. Since then, he has been more like family than household, though Antryn calls him "uncle" rather than "father." Privately, Hlarutin has seen enough of Antryn's temper to see a great deal of old Chalos in his son.

Other Branches

  • Corylus Thann: Matriarch's cousin (Renown 6) • 43 years. A man with fingers in too many pies to count, Corylus seems to know everyone and everything, especially when it comes to the rule of the city. He has friends among magistrates, guildmasters, the Guard, the Watch; he is even said to count at least one of the Masked Lords as a friend. Corylus does not use magic, and is very content to remain out of the House's main functioning, although he does seem very intent on recovering the old vineyards of House Thann...or of securing new ones.

Holdings

  • Resources Limit: If necessary, House Thann could probably generate about 11,000 gp in liquid coin and valuables within a month.

Maresgate (Villa)

Sashtar Street, North Ward

A plain white-and-grey mottled stone wall surround the North Ward villa of House Thann.

  • Hoofbeat House: A three-story-plus-cellars grand manorhouse, Hoofbeat House is quite an old edifice. Its ground floor is given over entirely to entertaining and household use spaces, including a theater and a ballroom. Its second and third floors hold household suites and rooms, with the cellars set aside for storage and servant quarters.
  • Raven's Roost: The smallest of the structures that make up the Thann villa, Raven's Roost was built for the House's magician members. It boasts a library and workshop rooms on the first floor and separated quarters that are modest but very private on the second floor. The third floor has storage spaces, laboratories, and spellcasting chambers.
  • Selistarr's Respite: Built by Selistarr Thann to alleviate some of the crowding in the main house, the Respite is well named, as it consists of extremely well-divided and -appointed suites for the household, as well as a modest kitchen and dining area.

Known Faction Perks

Scions and agents of House Thann in good standing might receive the following benefits:

  • Living Quarters: Renown 1+. Those in good standing with the House are given quarters within the House's Waterdhavian villa appropriate to their role in the House.
  • Living Expenses/Salaries: Renown 1+. Those in good standing with the House also receive a stipend of 1gp plus 5sp per day per point of Rank. This is not actual cash, but simply familial credit towards payment of Lifestyle costs. This stacks with the same kind of familial credit received from the Waterdhavian Noble Background (see Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide).
  • Business Opportunities: Renown 3+. Lynchpins to the House's operations receive access to a variety of business opportunities within the House's money-making endeavors. This is handled as "Running a Business" in downtime months. This does not incur a business expense, but if too many of the character rolls results that end in a loss of money, he can and will find his Rank in the House reduced.
  • Heir or Consort (Title): Renown 3+. The holder of one of the legal titles Heir of House and Consort of House, as recorded with the city of Waterdeep, is entitled to an additional 2gp per day in familial credit, per the "Living Expenses/Salaries" entry above. The heir is also accorded certain privileges within the legal system of Waterdeep, including the ability to speak on behalf of his House in some legal proceedings and the like.
  • Wealth of the House: Renown 10. The patriarch of the House is in total control of the House's finances and various holdings, established by the laws of Waterdeep.
