Irongarde Hills Domain

  • Terrain: Hills
  • Features: Road

The red-brown hills that mark the end of the Dornish Marches and beginning of the Marchwater Vale make up the majority of this domain. Though these lands were once rather forested, the Marchwater lords long ago saw the need to cut the trees back to the river, to prevent potential attackers from finding easy passage through its foothills.

Features

  • Marrowmont: Small Castle. The ancestral seat of House Graben, Marrowmont is a fairly sizeable structure, its foundations built on ancient First Men construction. Marrowmont stands tall atop a hill with a sheer cliff-face facing the Boneway as it descends out of the Dornish Marches, providing a tremendously defensible control over the road.
  • The Boneway: Road. The Boneway, that great road that grants swift and easy passage through the Dornish Marches finds its terminus here, cutting the Irongarde Hills neatly in half on their way to the Marchwater River.
  • Iron Mines of House Graben: Mines (Basic) Wealth Holding. The hills of Irongarde have produced precious iron ore for generations. There are even a few mines that are wholly played out on the lands, gaping empty holes in the land. The current one is still producing, with the Graben smallfolk of Martmin mainly making their livings toiling in the earth.

The sole estate of the Irongarde Hills exists primarily to man the last iron mine of House Graben. The cottars of the estate are all miners, and many of the farmers also take turns in the mines for their lord's portion of the year. Many of those farmers also own sheep, but often leave their daughters to tend to the flocks - a visiting knight once remarked that Martmin seemed to be a town of "miners and shepherdesses".

Martmin's fields provide just enough food to feed its folk and provide some nourishment for Marrowmont, primarily in the form of neeps, parsnips and other root crops and rye. It also has a sprinkling of other crops, including a small stand of almond trees. Blackberry vines are very nearly everywhere, covering many of its fences, and the community shares a large herb patch, with many medicinal and cooking herbs grown there.
