CoD Endurance

Endurance tests are made in response to stimuli or phenomena that may provoke a reaction in the character.

  • In mortal characters, these are often Breaking Points.
  • Endurance tests replace Breaking Points for characters that no longer use the Integrity trait.
  • Endurance tests combine two Resistance Attributes. Failure usually inflicts Conditions or Tilts, while success avoids them.

Cognitive Endurance

Cognitive Endurance tests are about resisting psychological stresses. The most common type of Cognitive Endurance test is used to resist fear, but any test which has an impact on the character's psyche qualify. If the outcome of a failed Endurance test should be fear, horror, insanity, or other Mental Conditions, it is likely a Cognitive Endurance test.

  • Dice Pool: Resolve + Composure
  • Modifiers: Anticipated or common stimuli (+1 to +5); supernatural stimuli (-1 to -5)
  • Test Results:
    • Dramatic Failure: You suffer traumatic psychological stress, possibly permanently. Take a Beat. If the stress...
      • ...was a fear response, take the Disquieted, Frightened or Oblivious Condition.
      • ...was a revulsion response, take the Disquieted or Squeamish Condition.
      • ...was inflicted by social interactions or by people whom the character is emotionally connected to, take the Broken Condition.
      • ...was something the character's psyche tries to "scrub" or forget, take the Addicted, Delusional, False Memories, or Fugue Condition.
      • ...was something the character's psyche hyper-fixates or obsesses about, take the Competitive, Distracted, Obsession, or Wanton Condition.
      • ...was any other source of psychological damage, take the Disquieted, Madness or Nightmares Condition.
    • Failure: You crack a little under the pressure. If the stress...
      • ...was inflicted by the character's own actions or decisions, take the Guilty Condition.
      • ...was a fear or revulsion response, take the Shaken Condition.
      • ...was from an encounter with the unknown, take the Confused or Spooked Condition.
    • Success: You resist any lasting effects, though the event or stimulus may linger in your memories or dreams for a few days.
    • Exceptional Success: Your resistance to the event is so profound that you gain confidence from your mettle. Gain the Steadfast Condition, or regain a point of Willpower.
