Researching Spells

Step One: Research

  • Use the standard research rules per Unearthed Arcana.
  • You need two pieces of useful lore per spell level (or one for a cantrip).
  • So a 3rd level spell would require six pieces of useful lore.

Spell research requires a minimum of one week per level of the spell being researched. So a 3rd level spell requires at least three weeks of research. This is only for the time duration - if you accumulate the necessary pieces of useful lore in less time, you do not need to make additional roles or spend more gold - just the minimum time requirement.

Step Two: Development and Experimentation Costs

  • In addition to the 100gp minimum per week of research, you must spend an additional amount per week spent researching, developing, experimenting and notation (cantrips have no additional cost).
  • Use this formula: spell level squared, then multiplied by 10 in gp.
    • Example: So a 3rd level spell would cost 3x3x10=90gp on top of the minimum 100gp for a total of 190gp per research roll.

Step Three: Scribing the final results into spellbook

Once research and development is completed, pay the normal cost to scribe the finalized spell into your spell book (50gp per level of spell or 25gp for a cantrip).

Using Spell Scrolls

  • Scenario A: If a scroll is on your spell list and of a level you can cast - you cast it. Yay. Good job.
  • Scenario B: If a scroll is on your spell list, but of a higher level than you can cast - roll your spell ability vs. DC of 10+spell level.
    • Pass - you cast it and the scroll goes poof. Go you.
    • Fail - you fail to cast it and the scroll still goes poof. Now make an Int saving throw vs DC 10.
      • Pass - nothing else happens. But you lost your scroll.
      • Fail - roll on the Scroll mishap table in the DMG. You suck. Haha.
  • Scenario C: If a scroll is NOT on your spell list, or if you HAVE NO spell list, you can still try and use the scroll IF you can read Tianne.
    • Same steps as above, but with Disadvantage on both your spell casting check and mishap save (use your primary spellcasting ability or Intelligence for non-spellcasters). Good luck, don't suck, don't die.
