Greetings. My name is V'neef Tatewaki, though the name I carried for the first 13 years of my life was Romi. In my youth I did not know who my father was, a secret my mother kept from me per his wishes. My mother was a prostitute and I spent my early years working in the brothel, primarily cleaning, kitchen duties and errands until my notable talents with numbers and ledgers became apparent to the owner and then I was put to work on the house books. Based on my appearance, it did not seem I was very likely to exalt, thus the V'neef family paid me little attention, though my father's wife did keep tabs just in case. When I exalted at age 14, a rather gruesome spectacle that caused a great deal of chaos, structural and bookkeeping damage to the brothel where I worked, I was snatched up in less than a day by the V'neef family. Before I had a chance to truly grasp what was happening to me, I had been shipped off to live with my father and begin my expedited formal education to prepare me to be rushed into my secondary schooling and induction to the V'neef family. I had heard a rumor that my mother had come searching for me and was paid for her "services" and sent away. I as accepted and began classes at the Spiral Academy, where I was sorted into The Brush Creed. I learned many valuable lessons during my seven years at the Academy and made many lasting connections. After I left the Academy, I attempted to seek my biological mother out. She had left the brothel some years back and no one knew where she had gone or what had become of her. I wish her well. She was a kind woman, treated me fairly and taught me the importance of cleanliness, appearance and proper hair care.
I had been adopted by my father's wife, now my step-mother. After I had graduated from the Spiral Academy I was almost immediately summoned south to where she and my uncle were located with more of my relatives, to work for the V'neef merchant fleet. This is where I am now. I have only known them for near a year total now, some months before the Academy and not again until seven years later when I started working for the fleet, which was only a few months ago. My family is...a little strange, but I must admit to having a sense of fondness for them. I am treated well enough for a bastard child of a wed-in husband. My obvious lack of pedigree is somewhat of a sore spot, possibly more so in my own mind than Mother's, but it's obvious considering I'm 22 and she has yet to ever present me to a potential spouse. I make myself as useful as possible, and I'm good at what I do, otherwise I'd probably have already been married off into some other family by now. It is my strength - and it has come in useful before, people tend to underestimate me based on my mundane appearance - I don't scream exalt like most of my kin do. I am very good at my job and in addition, I know things and have access to a wide web of informants that supply me with secrets and information that I use for the greater good of the V'neef family. I deserve to be a part of this family. The cultivation of a network of informants early on during my time at the Academy drew the attention of the All Seeing Eye and after some dialog, I was invited to join the organization at a rather young age. I gladly accepted and have worked hard to rise in the ranks quickly.
I have thus far failed to notate the appearance of my counterpart during my exaltation. He will surely continue to harrow me until I make a note of it in this document. When I exalted, a small bird manifested that was somehow attuned to my own soul, a familiar. He identified himself as "The Auditor" and has been a thorn in my side ever since. Useful at times, but more often an irritant to my personal peace - always nagging, correcting, second guessing, or just making irritating sounds or pecking at me because it knows I'm not likely to douse it in spices up & shove it into an oven with some potatoes. A delicious and QUIET meal that would be, though a tiny meal...I would need to double up on the potatoes. Not much meat on the scrawny little thing. Yes. He's pecking at my ear this very moment, discontent with my entry. About three years into my studies at the Academy, I somehow manifested a second familiar. Having studied myself to exhaustion, I had fallen asleep during a critical step of a project. I awoke with a start to find another small critter tugging at my ear. It was a tongma monkey that introduced himself as "The Collector" and his intervention probably saved me from failing the project I was working on. I soon discovered that he was appropriately named, though much more amiable in spirit than The Auditor, his frequent kleptomania and ability to speak has often made trouble for me. Why I keep manifesting familiars I do not know. I'm a little concerned at this point that I will continue to spawn more of them in the future & my mind will become far too noisy a place for me to still have cohesive thoughts.
My name is V'neef Tatewaki Romi. I am proud to be a part of my family and will serve them to the best of my ability. I am an administrator of the V'neef merchant fleet in the South, an honorable position I have earned through my services. I am a listener and keeper of secrets, sifting through them all to deliver those tidbits up to my superiors that may be of use to them, and storing away, using or selling the others that may be useful to myself or my connections. One day I hope to travel to the Blessed Isle and take a position in the magistracy of the Realm, where I will bring further honor to and make my family proud of the man they chose to rescue from a fate of mediocrity and probably an early death.
