Coruscant during the Galactic Republic
Though not the literal center of the Galaxy, Coruscant is its center in many other respects: political, cultural, economic and even astrogation (as it occupies the 0-0-0 galactic coordinates in that system). Renamed "Imperial center" under the Empire, Coruscant grows even more mighty as the hub of the thousand fleets and armies that serve Emperor Palpatine. With the rise of the Empire, Coruscant has become increasingly militarized. The entire planet is encircled by forbidding defense platforms, swarms of warships, and a nigh-impenetrable planetary shield.
Even under Imperial control, however, Coruscant's underworld is legendary. Criminals range from the feral wretches who dwell at the lowermost levels of the city to the powerful rogues who oversee galaxy-spanning crime syndicates.
Coruscant is an ecumnopolis - a single, globe-spanning city, with only a single range of mountains (the Manarai Mountains) in any kind of natural condition. Coruscant is one of the galaxy's oldest civilized world, predating any version of the Republic by tens of thousands of years. Coruscant's position relative to the major hyperspace lanes has always lent it an important position in galactic affairs, eventually becoming the capital of the Old Galactic Republic and remaining so as of the founding of the Galactic Empire.
As the planet developed, the needs of the economic powerhouse and galactic government brought with it a massive boost in population. The world was already covered by layers of urban cityscape, and it kepts growing. As the city stretched higher into the sky, the population stratified. The wealthy and powerful literally rose to the top, leaving the lower levels to the poor.
Skyscrapers reach kilometers into the air, while countless levels and sublevels delve deep into the planet's heart. Most buildings have internally regulated environments, and no surprise, for the city suffers periodic superstorms due to climate instability. A trillion sentients (by official estimates) call Coruscant home, and unofficial numbers may put the total far higher. Coruscant may well have been humanity's original homeworld, long ago in the mists of prehistory. Even now, humans make up the majority of the planet's population, a condition reinforced by Palpaine's anti-alien policies and widespread discrimination.
Though Coruscant still has some water frozen in its ice caps, it must import countless megatons of foodstuffs, millions of gallons of potable water, and vast amounts of raw materials to feed the world's voracious inhabitants. Even its oceans disappeared, consumed, polluted, or drained into labyrinthine networks of cisterns, pipes, and reserviors over the millenia.
- Imperial Palace: Formerly the central temple of the now-outlawed Jedi Order, the five-spired Imperial Palace rises above the skyline of Coruscant, gleaming darkly. Few even among the Imperial elite have ever been to the Emperor's sanctuary, and it is a deathtrap for any foolish enough to attempt infiltration.
- Column Commons: A massive open area exposed to wind and weather, made of duracrete. The expanse is peppered with orderly rows of thick duracrete columns which hold skyscrapers and other cityscape floating above the area. In its center is the great statue of Emperor Palaptine. Where once it was the center of Republic network broadcasting and journalistic publishing, the buildings that face the Commons are now the beating heart of the Imperial propaganda machine, with organizations striving to outdo one another in the dissemination of Imperial philosophy and talking points. City lore suggests it is also the location of the Imperial intelligence services, though there are no known public buildings that house such operations.
- Galactic Museum: Teams of archivists, anthropologists, archaeologists and various other academics work to carefully curate the contents of this massive museum, which holds artifacts and records from across the galaxy.
- Great Western Sea: An artificial body of water not far from the Manarai Mountains, the Great Western Sea is a reservoir created to provide scenic and relaxing stretches of terrain for the truly rich and tourists who can afford vacations at the retreats along it length.
- Level 1313: A deep sublevel of Coruscant, Level 1313 is perhaps the most notorious of the cityscape's many criminal districts. Topsiders have a thousand stories about the kinds of things that go on in 1313, and there's a good chance that many of those stories of cruelty and treachery are all too true.
- Manarai Mountains: Twin mountain peaks that rise out of the ecumenpolois that is the rest of Coruscant. It is within view of the Imperial Palace, and there are many floating restaurants that revolve around the mountains, providing the elite of Coruscant truly breathtaking views of its slopes.
- Senate Building: The seat of the Galactic Senate, the Senate Building is a massive, mushroom-shaped clear-domed structure in which the Senate Floor and the various offices of myriad bureaucrats, Senators and other personages of galactic government operate.
- The Works: An immense manufacturing center for a great many companies, the Works is an industrial center the size of many cities on other worlds. During the days of the Galactic Republic, it was a place of urban decay and crime, for most of its manufacturers had long ago moved off-world in search of cheaper operating facilities. With the rise of the Empire, however, new prosperity has come to the Works, for it is the center of Imperial manufacturing of armaments, even if much of its labor consists of alien indentured service.
- Cthon: Humanoid creatures that appear like nothing so much as decaying corpses with loose flaps of skin, filthy hair, and sharp-toothed maws used for the eating of flesh. Cthon are a genuine menace, and can be found haunting the lowest levels of Coruscant.
- Duracrete slug/worm: Slugs that dissolve and digest duracrete, consuming it and forming a layer of duracrete-like armor as an exoskeleon. They are on average three to five meters in length, though some in the deep layers of Coruscant reach up to ten meters.
- Gartro: Small dragon-like creatures with batlike wings, spiked tails and jaws full of sharp teeth. They are omnivorous and - despite their appearance - harmless scavengers. Though they are considered nuisances, as they form shrieking flocks that can disrupt the flow of airspeeders in Coruscant, their eggs have long been a staple of the very poor in the city. In recent years, gartro eggs have become a highly prized delicacy among the wealthy and trendy, and the poor find they can get several meals worth of credits out of a single clutch of eggs.
- Hawk-bat: Meter-and-a-half-long reptavian creatures with curved beaks and leathery wings common in the skies of Coruscant and other heavily urbanized or ecumenpolis worlds. Hawk-bats are large enough that they are genuine dangers if they fly freely, so most of them have learned to hunt in the pipes and largely-unpatrolled portions of Coruscant's underworld. They are vicious hunters who favor granite slugs, though a threatened flock of hawk-bats is a genuine danger even to a well-armed humanoid.
- Stratt: Mammalian, black-furred quadripeds who are docile and cuddly in their juvenile stage, but voracious and ferocious nocturnal hunters when full grown. Crime lords occasionally keep them as guard animals, and a few unscrupulous black marketeers often sold them to the unwary as juveniles without warning them of the two-meter-long terrors they eventually grow into.
- Thrantcill: Flying beaked animals, with flat black eyes, that live in flocks and fly in diamond formations, thrantcills are nomadic, venturing from north to south hemispheres of Coruscant's globe, following milder temperatures. Thrantcill are occasionally tamed and kept for their eggs and their livers, used to make a fine pâté.
